Ok so when I bought my car it came with a shift knob from pep boys or something and it would spin around all the time so I went and bought another one from pep boys that came with the mini screws and those black things you put on the screws but it still spins with that black part on so i just took that off and put the shift knob right on the shifter. My question is what are the point of that black thing it comes with? It seems pointless to me. I dunno I was just wondering if anyone knew. Thanks

Hmm I am not sure if I know exactly what you are talking about or not, but I think they just protect the metal, but I don't really know what the scres look like or what the black thing is. I suggest getting a shifter froim a junkyard, at least that probably won't spin around.

just a guess

the black rubber things are for you to insert into the shift knob, so that it'll grip the shifter and won't spin around.

i had a momo leather shift knob that i loved so i took it off of my tercel which is totaled and put it on my 240 and it keeps spinning around, so i just wrapped electric tape around top of the shifter so that when the shift knob is inserted you have to sort of... chuck it in, 'cause the electric tape is filling up the void space that was there before, so it won't spin around

Yup, the dismantlin' junkyard is a shift knob heaven. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
My shift boot was all ripped up; so, I went to a few local junkyard.
I found a good condition shift boot from a 82 RX-7 that fitted perfectly in my 96 240sx.
Paid like one buck for it too and a shift boot on ebay are going for ten bucks and above.
If I had the time, I would grab every shift boot I can get my hands on and make a profit out of it. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
But I'm too lazy. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

I guess its to protect the metal but it doesnt do jack to stop it from spinning around and electrical tape isnt in the directions so there has gotta be a purpose to it. The screws are small as hell too they are about as long as the word too literally. Anyways it doesnt matter to much to me just wondering if anyone knew what it was for. Thanks anyhow

My fault I posted without reading my thread the first time I meant you put the black thing onto the shifter then put on the shift knob and screw the screws into the black thing.
