You put 4 quarts of oil in the car right..... so I was wondering... how much of the engine does the oil cover? like 1/3?

What parts get submerged into the oil... maybe the oil covers up to the crank?

The oil sits in the pan. The only thing submerged in oil is the pickup or strainer or whatever you want to call it. The pump sucks the oil out of the pan and pushes it through all of it's channels where it coats the cams and crankshaft and everything else. Probably over simplified but thats what I know. I used to think the oil stayed up in the valve covers where you poured it. (Thats was long ago though)

EDIT: If I'm wrong on anything, someone put me in my place.

Garrett

I was under the impression that the engine/pan alone takes 3.75qts, but adding the filter it would take 4qts. I may be off though.

Oil lubricates the crankshaft/bearings/bottom half (doesn't/shouldn't go up to the pistons, afaik) as well as the top half (cams, valve tidbits?... err... timing chain...?) and if you have a turbo, the turbo as well. Ummm I'm sure there are some other parts it gets to, but I'm not particularly familiar with specifics of engine internals.

Let me throw in, regardless of relevance, that the Z32 has oil squirters that squirt oil on the underside of the pistons to help cool them and maybe to lubricate the pin or something. I don't know of any other engine that uses those though.

iirc both the KA24DE and the SR use piston oil squirters.

Yea. The KA, SR, and I'm pretty sure the CA motors have under-piston oil squirters. I thought that I had a pic of them on my KA, but the crankshaft is in the way. Musta taken the pic at a funny angle.
