T25 Rebuild questions

hey guys, just wondering..

im looking to rebuild my stock T25, I've looked around at a few different places. and i just have a few questions (if any of them have been covered before, just give me the link to the thread...i searched but couldnt find exactly what i needed)

1.as far as the rebuild kit, would it be carbon seal or dynamic? i heard the early turbos (before 1990) were the carbon steel type..and anything newer is dynamic..

2.can you refer me to any repudable place to get a rebuild kit? Ive looked around, but they all pretty much look the same to me, any advice?

any info would really be appreciated, thanks!

Use the T25 as an ornament and conversation starter for your house and upgrade to the S15 GT28 and get sideways.

If your doing this yourself you wanna first take the turbo apart and see if it can infact be rebuilt, start there, that being said T25 rebuild kits cost about ~$75 and you will need to get the turbine shaft and compressor wheel balanced as a unit, the person who balances said parts will mark the nut (which is reverse threaded) with a tiny punch mark and also will punch mark the turbine shaft and basically you take it home put the rebuilt kit to work and alignment the punch marks up and you should be good to go. Hardest part of this whole operation is removing the turbine housing from teh center section and sometimes the comressor housing is a bitch to remove to.

thanks for the info.

im actually not going to be rebuilding it myself, im handing the job off to a guy who rebuilds them for a living for diesel trucks. im just going to be supplying everything for him. I know the turbo is rebuildable, the rear seal went in it, very little shaft play if any, no chips fins, it still boosts fine...just burns oil after long periods of boosting.

any place that i should look to get a rebuild kit? (i dont really know who to trust/who not to)

once the car goes off the road for this upcomming winter, the T25 is coming off and a 2871 .64 is going on...either that or a spec r t28.

As for the blancing of that turbines and shaft, I wouldnt even wate my money on it, Ive rebuilt many with out balancing them and no problems so far (1 1/2 years on my first one) and that ones on a Pulsar GTI-R running 1.0 Bar daily.

Didn't want to start a new thread, so I'm bringing this one back.
I'm about to rebuild a T25 off an S13 CA18DET, the problem is, I'm not sure if the CA T25 uses a dynamic seal just like the SR T25, or if I need to get the carbon seal. Would anyone happen to know?
Thanks for any info.

they're dynamic seal. usually carbon seal ones are older model turbos (80's) and by the time the ca18's came out...they started using dynamic seals.

if you want, i have an OEM garrett kit (i had shipped from the UK) i never used just because it couldnt get to me in time.

Sorry to bother you again, but would you happen to know whether our T25's use a 5/16" or a 3/8" journal bearing? I'm about to buy a rebuild kit locally, but I need to specify which size journal bearing I need and I'm not sure.

im pretty sure they're the smaller ones. the larger bushings are for larger trim (like a t28..)

just remember to make your marks very legible before you take it apart. Before you take off the compressor housing (with the large c clip) take a scrawl and make a line on the back of the center section..and then the back of the compressor housing. Then when you put it back together, all you need to do is just line up the marks so you know the compressor is clocked at the right angle.

if you have anymore questions, just PM me, I'd be glad to help.

Usually kits come with both bushings (1 pair of 3/8" and 1 pair of 5/16"), but your T25 uses 5/16".

I did my own T25 rebuild but wouldn't bother to up grade the internals I just bought a T28.

If you rebuild yourself you still need a shop to balance the turbine shaft and compressor wheel as a unit and then they mark it for you and you line it up and put everything back together.

Is the payoff for upgrading a T25 worth it compared to say...looking for a spec r T28?

i'd just go with a spec r t28....ball bearings are nice thing to have....plus a divided turbine housing.

rebuilding a t25 is great if your on a budget..and/or just need the car to get around... its more for reliability, not if your looking to gain any hp.
