Timing help.
Ok, I've read about a billion threads on this, and each one seems to say something different. I noted that my cams looked off the other day when I pulled my valve cover. This engine has been rebuilt and it will be the first time I fire it. Before I started it up I wanted to make sure everything was right on it and I got to this:
![]() Everything should be at TDC. As far as I can tell, Ive cranked it and this point seems to be the highest on the first cylinder. Does this look right to you? Does not look right to me. Shouldn't the markings be at 10 and 1 or something? Not 8 and three. I'm not a mechanic just a DIY'er trying to learn and Ive read the fsm and everything I can on here. Ideas? Any help is appreciated. Edit. Ok, I may be a retard. I think I found out the problem. Still throw Ideas out there though, cause im still not 100%.

The lobes are facing 8 and 4. I tried to crank it around again to see what it does and nothings moving. Im right at the tdc mark on the main pulley. What the hell.

Don't know how the timing is for the KA's but on SR's the cam key for the intake needs to be at 10 and the exhaust cam key needs to be at 12 at TDC on the compression stroke. (#1 lobes facing outward)

Yeah, the intake cam is not going anywhere. The sprocket was moving, but the cam just chilled in the same spot the whole time.

Only the intake cam isn't moving? Or the exhaust cam isn't either?
If the intake cam isn't moving, but the exhaust cam is... That's weird, and it probably sucks to fix. |

So I just realized something that might affect this. Ive been having transmission problems, and it may be stuck in 1st or 2nd gear. Would this affect the intake lobes movement at all? The cars been in neutral, so I thought. And another discovery, I think the intake cam is off an s14 ka24de. I just got this thing off a guy. Probably should have asked for more specifics before I ripped into it.

I think Im gonna go back through and double check the torque on everything, perhaps its bolted down to tight?
Or the head is super warped?

no idea other than whats already been said as to why the intake cam isnt turning. You should be able to time it by making sure the 1st cylinder is at tdc and the intake/exhaust valves are all closed at the same time though. -well, not really now that I think about it

You could have sheared the end of the cam off, just behind the gear. I've seen that before. Take the gear off and inspect the cam.
