I dont get why they're making such a big deal about it. China sent litteraly hundreds more athletes this year than the 04 games. Why would them winning the medal race be such a potentially huge upset?

Because hosting the Olympic games means your country automatically qualifies for every event.

Being in an event doesn't necessarily mean a good chance a gold.
