Tagging along with the SoCal Supras.

Today, the SoCal Supras had a cruise and Barbecue. So I tagged along with the S14 since my Supra is down. Here are some pics:

We met up at Tustin, and this mobile police thing parked next to us

Cruising along the way to Laguna Beach then to Huntington Beach for the BBQ

At the beach...

more pics when they get uploaded...

The owner of the FD is a good friend of mine, Ken of Shine Auto Project.

No MKIV's because they were too cool to cruise with the MKIII's

It's been said before...

Supras weren't Supras before MKIV. They all look like Celicas to me *hate* *Hate* *HATE* lol.

1JZ in MK3 Supras bring up the cool factor considerably. The 7M was such a horrible motor...

Ken's FD is uber hot. RE Amemiya rear diffuser?

Correction - The MKIII Supra is when the Supra became its own car and ditched the Celica Supra name.

The 7M is not a horrible motor. People who don't know much about think it's a horrible motor. I've built many 7M's with no problems including my former 7MGTE which I sold to my buddy and he is now beating the crap out of it with zero problems.

4 of the MKIII's there had 1J's. My buddy has a 2J in his, another one has a 1J VVTi, etc. I've seen it all. I will be going 1.5J with the next Supra I get.

Ken's company, Shine Auto Project, makes replica body kits. BUT, they make it with much better quality than the originals:

Not really. The main problem with the 7M motors (as I'm sure you are aware is that they like to eat head gaskets. Now, what you probably aren't aware of is WHY they eat head gaskets... You see, when the motors were being assembled at the factory, the torque specs for the head had been set too low. Hence, they didn't seal properly, and the head gasket would blow. Once you replace it and torque it down properly, blowing the head gasket is no longer an issue.

I miss my MK3 Supra...
it looks like a crazy cruise...
And the 7M motors were good motors, once you fix the headgasket problem it will take a beating. They were a bit too heavy for drifting, but still great cars.

Shit, apparently it is! All I've ever heard was that they're heavy, didn't flow very well, and as soon as you up the boost, they blow headgaskets. Interesting stuff.

I drifted an mkIII, and they do drift like shit, but its not weight, the chassis is way too flexible and they love to start understeering while oversteering. Its weird

Okay, I'm bored so I'm gonna let my inner Toyota geek spew forth information for a bit...

Quote:

Mk3s didn't look like Celicas at all. Supra history time:
Mk1 Celica Supras were made from '79 to '81, and based on the 2nd gen '78 to '81 Celica liftback. The bodies were the same from the a-pillars back. They had longer front ends to accommodate the inline-6 engine, and they came with more options for interior gadgets and whatnot.
Mk2 Celica Supras were made from '82 to '85, and based on the 3nd gen '82 to '85 Celica GTS liftback. Again, the bodies were the same from the a-pillars back, save for the longer front ends to accommodate the inline-6 engine, and as far as I know, the interior and whatnot was the same as a fully-optioned Celica GTS. The Celica Supra had a cooler rear liftback, too.
Now, where things differ... For 1986, Toyota decided to go in a different direction with the new 4th gen Celica (fwd sporty commuter car), so they dropped the "Celica" part of the Supra name, and the Mk3 Supra was born. The body was COMPLETELY different from that off the 4th gen Celicas. In fact, the Supra was now much closer to being an MX73 Cressida that a Celica. Same motor, trans, rear end, etc.

In short: Mk1 and Mk2 "Supras" looked like Celicas. Mk3 did not.

Yupp, rwd. That particular Celica is an '84/'85... All Celicas were RWD until the 4th gen Celi came around in 1986. From then on, they were all FWD (well, with the exception of the GT4/AllTrac models made between 1988 and 1999).

The MKIII Supra CAN drift, it just needs a LOT more suspension work than you would like to do. Plus, I'd rather throw that suspension money in my S14

The Supra you used had to have been a Hardtop. The Targa Top's are A LOT more stiffer as long as you keep the targa on. The reason for the understeer/oversteer is the stock LSD doesn't like to stay locked all the time. It'll lock up, but unlock suddenly then lock up again. A lot of Supra owners remedy this with a KAAZ 2 way.

I'm not exactly sure about the MKIV guys, they usually don't roll unless there are a few other MKIV's going. The majority of the Supras that went put down some good power. Even some of the MKIV guys wouldn't be able to hang with a few of the MKIII guys.

Guess that's what Fast and the Furious did...hype up the MKIV

They have stuff for a LOT of cars. Their offical site is still not fully functional, but you can check out their EBay store. If you're interested in something, I can arrange a better price than their EBay prices. Or if you can get a group buy, I can probably arrange that too with a good discout for the group rate.

they are actually 19's. 11 in the rear and I believe 10 up front. Don't know about the offsets though. Ken is actually selling those wheels. They are SSR's.

Boris! you should get another one! You had one of the cleanest Supras. You should come back down to SoCal sometime. We're going to put the turbo back on in the KA!
