today, and 8 months ago

today i went to torrance for something called jdm monday, whatever, anyways i meet my friends at this gas station, and like 10 mins later the cops show up and point into our group and then motion come over to them, i went over and the first thing the guy says is, "are you going to be doing any street racing in torrance tonight?" and my response was huh? so he repeated him self, and then said "or are you just going to go somewhere else and do it" I said, I only do that at the track up at willow springs, i have a clean driving record and would like to keep it that way. plus its way safer on the track. his response was " well we know people go over to van ness street and race, we wouldn't want to have to stop you and start checking vehicles for mods" and i asked where is this vaness street. (i had no idea anyways)
no worrys there... torrance is lame, but the cops are cool at warning you about the lame drag racer people.

about 8 months ago i was speeding on sunset, going 45 or so, saturday night, 130am got pulled over, ( the cop had me pull into a red curb zone) said i was speeding, then asked if when the last time i had a drink, and i told him about 400 and some odd days ago, and he thought i was being a wise ass, but since i'm sober its true... anyhow, he asked me to get out of the car so he can have me do some field sober tests ( and i got a rush of anxiety) and he asked me raise one leg, look up at the sky and touch one finger to my nose. (and i was on a slight hill too) i couldn't do it, but at the same time i was not taking him seriously, i swore this was some sort of joke, i even told him, is this some sort of punk'd reality tv shit. anyways i finally told him, look i'm not drunk, give me a breathalyzer test. well he had to take me to the station to do it, and put me in the back of the car, but offered to move my car to a metered parking spot so it would not get towed, and i was like ok.
so he starts the car and the whole time i am behind the car i am thinking oh shit he's going to know is sr.... he goes and i hear varooom, pssst, varooom pst. then he parks it gets in the car, starts driving, and he starts asking me if i have a turbo or super charger or nitrious, that its quick, and i told him i dunno, its a cute little sports car, i bought it cause it looks cute, but i think i got ripped off cause it makes all sorts of wierd noises when i shift over 3k rpms...
i go to the station, blow a 0 on there machine and they take me back to my car.......

You've been asking a lot of dumbshit questions lately.

1) I think it's a bad idea.

2) yes, you can (and eventually will) get your car impounded just for having an sr20 in there

3) "Fix it" - negative. The tickets are for "modified emissions" and must be passed off by the ref (which you'll need a completely stock engine for), pay a $380 fine, or both.

4) You should not own an engine that can get your only car taken away - because then, you truly are fucked. That's why we all have multiple cars.

Reading through this thread... it sounds like a right ball ache! It makes me appreciate that here in the UK, you can do what the f**k you want as long as it passes an annual safety check (brakes, lights, rust etc).

Sorry if this is a dumb queston, but say you have a car registered to a different state that allows more modications, is it still illegal to drive in CA?

Wow. Cali truly fails.

popping my hood for a cop? lol, not unless he's impressed with how it sounds and wants to check it out. we dont even have emission checks here.

If i lived in Cali I would have a regular daily and trailer my 240 everywhere.

honestly, like what everyone has been saying, it all depends on YOU.

1. The way you drive.
2. The way your car looks.
3. And the way you interact with a cop, when pulled over.

me persoanlly, i have daily driven a SR20 for about 8 - 9 months. I have gotten pulled over, but never hasseled. Always drove safely and responsibly. And i never did anything stupid on the streets. Also, I've gotten pulled over twice with my SR. First time was for exhaust, and the second time was for speeding ( 60 in a 45 zone ) Both times I was nice to the cop, and I guess because of that, I've never had to pop my hood. and....now a days...im rocking the KA and love it!! Always show respect to a cop

been rollin my s13 sr swapped coupe for two years, and i havnt been stopped yet. i really think all of the people being bothered by the police are in the sgv. i live in upland, and around here u will get stopped by the cops if ur doing something stupid, but theyre tring to find criminals. on the real, a kitted, dumped, primered, big exhaust, rice lookin eye soure will get u a ref ticket, but ur most likely gonna roll away with ur car.
but i dont know about sd.

I cant believe this thread hasnt got locked or people pinked. Zilvia doesnt condone illegal activities on its site, you guys should be really careful of what you say. Any non-usdm motor is illegal to drive on public roads, dont you know that??

^^^ we are not telling you to put a Sr and run it on the street, we are asking just peoples experiences. we all know its illegal but some have ways around it to make it legal like (Blakezx) sorry for droping names but hes from Sd and has a Rb and its street legal.

That's how I was too. And I was in a pinstripe suit, obviously going to work. Still popped it.

I was out for a test drive after i put in my boost controller and i got pulled over in a construction zone...the cop was heated and thought my car was stolen cuz i had the keys out and covering my boost gauge with my knee...so he tells me to pop the hood and i start to sweat cuz i got an sr..he shakes shit around sayin i dont think thats stock but even tells me he has no clue what he is lookin at... he even messed with my boost controller turning it up and down but i just didnt say anything and acted clueless.he calls for backup but noone around so he lets me off with a speeding ticket and didnt mention the construction zone..after that i spray canned all my piping and bov flat black

If you're talking about that whole propane conversion thing, it ended up being a scam.

The ref is supposed to fail you if you're not completely stock... shouldn't matter what you get sent there for, period. :/ Decibel tests used to be performed at CHP stations, now if they're at ref's, we're EFFED.

Good luck, report back to us with the results!

well i went to the reff today at chaffey college in rancho. they seemed really nice. I passed the visual. but I have to go back for smog and decibal. but before that I need to change out my cat. because I cheated smog due to it not being able to pass. there also gonna check the timing and all that. and does anybody know where the check engine light on a 180sx cluster is. because they're gonna check that too. thanks

^^^ I don't think you're allowed to have the 180SX cluster on legally, because wouldn't that be considered tampering with the odometer? I think you can only put a cluster that has more miles than what your original one had.

As long as the title reflects that odometer does not read true milage when the vehicle is sold, I don't see how it would be "illegal". The CEL is in the same spot as a USDM cluster IIRC.

Experiences? I had just bought a CA swapped coupe and when we got on the freeway some IC piping came loose (we didn't know till later). Anyway, we were on the shoulder, hood open, looking for what was wrong. CHP came by, came right in front of the engine bay, asked us if we were ok, then pushed us to the next offramp. Never said a word about the engine.

Then again, I have NEVER seen a hood popped till a few days ago. Some white EG6 on the side of the 5N near Irvine had his hood popped. Tripped me out.
