A little late to this I know but this is my car Ron is talking about. R33 GTR wheels 17x9 +30. Tires are a fuzion (yes they run a little small) Zri 275 40 17 all four corners. Fenders just have the lip rolled smooth, Tein ss coils. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not the greatest pics but all I could find fast. That makes me a little sad. I rarely come in here, but when I do, it's usually to look at your posts. I loved your car SO much when it was running that kinda stuff on stock metal. *tear*

Well guys finally ready to order my big boy wheels. Current body setup is 20mm front fenders and 50mm rear overs on a 93 240sx fastback. I want to clear 315's in the rear and 275's in the front. Which offsets should I order. Ordering either new Work VSkf's or SSR Professors in 18 x 9.5 and 18 x 11. Help me choose offsets this is a major purchase for me. Should I go widers on the front fenders, to say like 30mm or 40mm fronts?

![]() I think the reason that this topic seems so hard to nail down is that there are really two dimensions to a wheel that you need to know on a 240sx, one objective, one subjective.
The objective measurement is the distance from the hub face till you hit something on the inside (like a control arm or the strut). This is also referred to as BACKSPACE. This distance really doesn't change much, even between s13 and s14. Sure an 18" wheel may have a bit more clearance than a 16" wheel to the control arm, and 5* camber may get you in more trouble with your strut before 1.5* will. But for the most part, this number doesn't change, and is what we should be comparing! The subjective measurement is the distance from the hub to the outside of the wheel. I've never seen this distance labeled on a wheel diagram, so I'm going to call it FRONTSPACE. This is the only thing that should be changing depending on overfenders, stretch, monster rubber/buldge, S13 vs. S14, roll, pull, etc. I find FRONTSPACE to be a matter of taste, as such it should be calculated from proper measurements and good wheel/tire size with accompaning pictures as have been provided in this thread already. Bust out the calculator people! Once you know what the max backspace IS, and what frontspace you WANT: bust out the calculator again, and you've got your max wheel. Almost all of these pictures and descriptions were pilfered from this thread. I'll break em up by front and back, because I'm trying to define max backspace per end with this post. FRONT backspace 153mm ![]() I think that this first picture is the most helpful. Yes the wheel is hitting the strut at exactly 153mm, but it wouldn't be with shorter springs/taller ride height/small spacer. backspace 157mm gsracers 18x10 + 18 w 275 rubber ![]() backspace 149mm ![]() backspace 157 ![]() backspace 159 ![]() REAR: backspace 172mm ![]() yall may not be impressed by this cat's "flushness", but the sucker goes deep! & those are 275s (on 17x9.5 +39), look how much room there is on the frontface still, and those fenders don't even look rolled! This echoes my earlier post that there is no excuse for an s14 to be rolling around on anything <275s in the rear. backspace 173mm ![]() Again one of the most helpful pictures that our fellow zilvians have bestowed upon us! Basically this tells you that unless you're running skinny ass stock type dampers, or relocate your rear damper, that you will NEVER get much deeper than a 178mm backspace! proving my backspace is universal idea here's a couple s13 pushing the limits: backspace 173mm ![]() backspace 174mm ![]() from ThatGuy: I saw you used my car as a reference for your backspacing homework. ![]() However, I must warn you, that at that point in my set-up I ended up gouging the inner lip of my rear wheels ![]() Putting this together took a bit of work, but we now have half the equation. MAX backspace Front~ 150-159mm MAX backspace Rear~ 172-179mm

That, Sic, is exactly the information I have been looking for.
What do you think is the optimum width and backspacing? I'm liking 18x10 +14(153mm back spacing) 275/35 and 18x11 +22(174mm back spacing) 315/35.

For the rear though you might even be able to pull off 18x11.5 +26. that's using a Backspace of 172, and a Frontspace of 120mm (which I'm thinking is the most you could have and still get under stock s14 R&P'd fenders and not have it look whack).

Good call, the s13 can't handle the same frontspace.

i never knew those pics would be that much help
haha. i feel liked. i put 15mm spacers on the front setup. and 8mm on the rear. i'm gona switch that 15mm to the rear and run a 275/40 and 20mm spacer up front. and run the 255/40 up there instead of the rear this time. |

i completely agree and i think that's what this thread should be about. but up front, camber doesn't affect strut clearance unless you're using camber bolts, only fender clearance.

While I haven't run that myself, I think it would fit under stock fenders.
Maybe some one else will chime in. Edit Try this wheel size tool. http://wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp You can punch in the numbers of a know to work setup(say gsracer's front setup) and then try your own setup side by side. With a little bit of imagination you can get a good idea of what will work with whichever fenders you want.

Frontspace
I'm not as prepared for this post, but it's definitely needed, so here it goes. These are all stock fenders, so if you have/want overfenders, just add that amount to the frontspace of the stock fenders as posted at the bottom. So if you're pushing some flushness (>255 on an s13, and >275 on an s14) on stock fenders post 'em up and I'll edit them in so that we can get a more accurate numbers for max frontspace. And remember that these frontspace numbers are more subjective than the backspace numbers. And just because it clears the fender, doesn't mean it clears the brakes, or that you won't need silly camber. Also pay attention to how stretched the tires are here when picking your final frontspace.
S13 FRONT 94.3mm frontspace ![]() 104.3mm frontspace ![]() This is on a stock unpulled fender, so 105mm is probably about max front space for an s13 on the front. So with a 20mm overfender or pull, you can get away with 125mm frontspace. S13 REAR 94.3mm frontspace ![]() 92mm frontspace ![]() 80.65mm frontspace ![]() 285s on the back of a stock s13... Wow! To get this much rubber on the back of an S13 you probably have to keep the front space under 90mm. S14 FRONT 116 frontspace ![]() Ace is pushing the limit here, and admits to beating the front fender to within an inch of its life to make this work. 109 frontspace ![]() S14 REAR 117 frontspace ![]() This guy's running an 18x10 +10 on what looks like a R&P stock rear fender. But, it's only a 255 tire. 112 frontspace ![]() Again here's more than 100mm front space on the back of an S14, but it took some serious stretch/wimpy tire to make it happen on stock fenders (235 series rubber on an 18x10 enkei) 97 frontspace ![]() Probably should keep the front space around 100 if you want to run some real rubber (285s on an 18x10). Max Frontspace with stock fenders: S13 Front 95-105 S13 Rear 80-95 S14 Front 109-116 S14 Rear 97-117

From before: Max backspace Front 150-159mm Max Frontspace Front 95-105 Olah's preposed backspace (9x12.7) + (0 offset) = 114.3 Clears by a mile on the inside. Unless he just wants to look cool with mad flushness on his overfenders, he better add some offset. Olah's preposed frontspace (9x12.7) + (0 offset) = 114.3 Max frontspace is normally about 105 with some camber and stretch on the front of an s13. Add 20mm over fenders, and if you want your tires to be on the inside of the fenders your frontspace better be <125mm (105+20). Olah's 114.3 frontspace will definitely put him flush/inside his 20mm front over fenders. Summation: Yes they fit, but with some more offest and a wider wheel there is room for more! How to calculate the true MAX!!! Take the max backspace and add that to the max front space plus any overfenders. In Ohlas case that is: 150 + 95 + 20 = 265mm wheel width 159 +105 +20 = 284mm wheel width devide by 25.4mm/in to get the numbers you're used to looking at. 265/25.4= 10.4" wheel 284/25.4= 11.2" wheel I've already explained how to calculate offset, but one more time: let's take a 10.5" wheel since that will be the closest/easiest thing to find in the realworld 10.5 x 25.4 = 266.7mm wide wheel 266.7/2= 133.35 width devided in half gives you the backspace of a zero offset wheel. since we need the backspace somewhere between 150 and 159, that means the offset will become 159-133.35= 25.65mm 150-133.35= 16.65mm You can either order a 17or18x10.5 +16 and probably be safe, or go for the full monte and get +25 and run the risk of possibly needing a spacer depending on how much rubber you want to run, the width of your coilovers, etc. Remember, if you want to go with the 284mm wide wheel you are going to be pushing it. You'll probably have to have a very exacting alignment and a bit of stretch to make this work. 265mm/10.4" wide wheel is STILL pushing it, but you'll have a little more wiggle room. The question now becomes how much rubber can I run? This chart might be helpful. But remember that if you're pushing the limits and using max frontspace (especially) and max backspace you may need to go wheel width in mm + nothing (rather than plus the 20-40mm). Wheel Tire: inches/mm + 20-40mm usually is fine 7 177.8 7.5 /190.5 8 /203.2 8.5 /215.9 9 /228.6 w/ 245-265 9.5 /241.3 10 /254.0 10.5 /266.7*** w/ 285-305J 11 /279.4 11.5 /292.1 12 /304.8 So Olah... How bout a 18x10.5 +16 with a 265 (maybe even a 285) tire!?

My budy Miguel at RMJ motorsports was the one that got me started really thinking about this when he asked me if I thought 275s would work with stock fenders on his new hatch.
After all the research I thought I'd share a specific example presuming you wanted the same wheels and tires in front and back. From my max rubber post (max backspace is about the same on both s13 and s14) MAX backspace Front~ 150-159mm MAX backspace Rear~ 172-179mm Max Frontspace with stock fenders with R+P: S13 Front 95-105 S13 Rear 80-95 S14 Front 109-116 S14 Rear 97-117 (107 really is perfect with a good r+p) The perfect s13: these wheels will fit with stock fenders after a good (not crazy) roll and pull! Front: 150bs + 104fs = 17x10 +23 Rear: 172bs +82fs = 17x10 + 32-45 You could buy a set of four of the same higher offset wheels and just use a spacer in front to get the proper offset. Front: 150bs + 91.3fs = 18x9.5 +29.35 Rear: 172bs + 69.3fs = 18x9.5 +25.6-51.3 If you want 9.5" wide wheels for example: I kow 5zigen makes a 18x9.5 +35 which would be perfect in the rear, and in the front would work perfect w/ a 1/2" spacer FYI: I consider Rolled and Pulled fenders to still be stock.
