SR Want to rid of this damn push button!!

Heres my set up....

90 s13 w sr redtop...
I've got a push button to start my car but it's always really rough to start and from what i've searched....its better to start the car with the key. I'd like to do this but never touch much on the car that deals with the electrical aspects. I'd like to know what to do to get the car started with the key.....and if there is anything i should be looking out for. I don't want to go in there and burn something out and bring unwanted problems. Just tired of having to press the damn button four times to get the car started. Thanks guys!

how do you turn accessory and "on" on?? do you use key at all? find where original wires were cut and reattach them.

you can see ignition switch in this picture.

there is constant power coming in and then the ignition switch has 4 wires going out ie accessory, on , and two wires for start

the harness wires will be different from the wire colours right at the switch. switch unplugs from harness. they may have used push start because the ignition switch was not working. solder the wires back together.

Thanks a lot! I learned that they put a push button on my car out of laziness. Yes I am using the key for the accessory. Should I continue with the instructions you gave me? Thanks for your time and help!

have a look at the wiring for the push button. I'm guessing they cut the wire that goes to the starter and the button connects the wire to another wire that has 12v+. find out how many wires go to button and where the power wire gets it's power from. get rid of power wire and reconnect starter wire to where it was cut. if you have a camera take some pictures.

Looks like it's two wires. One to the battery and one To the starter. Should I take the wire going to the starter and run that one to the ignition? And ditch the one going to the battery.

From the way the four wires look in the pic above coming out...which is the one that goes to the starter? Top left, right? Bottom left, right? Thanks for all the help!

Your colours will not be exactly the same.

the wire colours may change in about a foot from that picture where it plugs into the harness.

white with red stripe- is power coming in
blue- accessory
black with green stripe-"on" position
black with yellow-start-goes to fuse
black with white-start goes to interlock relay and then starter(it changes to black/yellow as it leaves interlock relay to go to starter)

Easiest thing to do is to look at which wires have been cut. If only one wire is cut, it will be the wire that goes to interlock relay/starter.
There are two wires that get power when you turn to start but they may not have used second wire.

Cool I'll look for that wire and try and get it connected. Meanwhile the car is starting better by turning the key all the way (like im starting the car) and pressing the button. Thanks for all the help!

Good stuff The second start wire sends 12volts positive to the ecu at pin 34 so I assume it must be important but I have no idea what it does. I assume(guess) that that wire was not cut by previous owner and when you turn the key now you are sending voltage to the ecu.

Actually the lights aren't dimming. When i key foward to on....i hear the my walbro prime. When i key foward like im gonna start it...the cd player turns off and other electrical stuff. At that point i press the button and the car turns right on (with the key foward). I THINK what was happening is that the car was flooding because before i started doing this the car would crank and crank. I'd have to pressed the gas a lot to get it started. Who knows!!! But the car starts normally now wired to the ignition. Thanks friends for the input!

there's many cleaner ways to doing this when you know what you're doing but here's the easiest for you

attach a long wire to the thick black and yellow striped wire that goes to the ignition switch.

run that wire all the way to your starter solenoid wire which is the little black/yellow wire coming off your starter

voila

Dave

his problem is the motor's not turning over from what i read. if the start signal wire that goes to the ecu which is the orange wire on the brown (since his chassis is a 92) plug behind the glove box isn't connected his car may not run, but his starter will still turn the motor over.

truthfully, there's probably something he missed with the wiring as far as the park/neutral switch, or the clutch inhibitor switch, but an easy bypass is to do what i mentioned above.

at that point the motor will turn over with the key, if it doesn't start up and run then you have other gremlins and we'll go from there.

Dave

do you happen to know what the start signal triggers/does?

yes, it lets the computer know that the car is trying to start - it makes starts a lot easier.

if the start signal wire that goes to the ECU is not connected, then the car will only start if you crank it long (maybe 5-10 seconds) or if you open the throttle with the gas pedal.

i had mine disconnected for years, its a nice security feature knowing that i am one of the few people that can start my car since i know its quirks.

mike

ps: i dont remember ANY of the factory plugs, connectors or wire colors since i completely re-wired my entire car from scratch. the only way i recall color-codes or harnesses is through my spreadsheet as i documented it all in there.
