It took me a while to read this whole post, but I loved it start to finish. It's great to see people with imagination and determination to complete a project as great as this. I'm also in Okinawa and I see Silvia's all over the place but I definitely am going to notice this S15 on the round compared to all the others.

Goddamn man, after all this time your still going at it. Glad to see you got the patience for this. Its a hell of a project. Just wish you would've had some video of this thing finished and on the highway for some sprints. This thing will never reach its potential in america, sadly. You give me hope tho that I can make my S14 as sexy and sweet as this is. You have turned my favorite silvia into a godly car.

just make sure to put your aero somewhere separate, I remember the driftworks s15 when they had it shipped half of the OEM aero was broken all to hell from it shifting around in the container.

Good lord, in the 9 years i've been playing with the S-chassis this is one of the most detailed highest caliber builds i've seen. Props to you for taking the time and having the patience to see this through.

Here are some pictures of the motor in the bay and some other pictures here and there. You will notice the black sharpie marks all over the front of the engine bay. those are my cut lines for tomorrow when I start cutting all of that crap out to redo it in sheet metal. Have a good one and enjoy.

For Discussion Purposes - Transmission/GearBox thoughts
Rules - Keep it on topic - No BS about which is cooler, it is all about what is more EFFECTIVE for my money. I am considering the following options for my S15 when it comes time for a gearbox. Let me know what you think, throw in some input on either one of them. I am not looking to be baller or PIMP, I am looking to deliver power effectively over as long a period as possible without blowing shit up everyday. Option 1 - RB25DET Mission with O.S. Giken Cross Mission Set and soem treatments from Richmond Gears. Pros: Street Drivable Availability of parts, I have the 25 Case ready to go back, proven to about 750-800 before it blows up and in some cases even more. Cons: Cost (2300.00 or more for the gearsets, plus rebuild kit for the mission, plus shipping cost for the transmission), Clutch replacements are a bitch (triple plate RB clutches are not cheap either); Requires center plate to really deliver power effectively. TOtal cost after it is all said and done = roughly 7K Option 2 Dog engagement Gearset (PPG), Pros: great shifts and capable of handling the power easily, fitment is not problem, cost effective for a dog mission. Cons: Has to be rebuilt at relatively short intervals (about 5k miles) and rebuild costs are extremely expensive; street drivability decreased, noisy. Cost after it all = roughly 10K to get it rolling Option 3: O.S. Giken Sequential (OS88) Pros: nice box on the track, no missed shifts, good selection of gear ratio's. Cons: Not traffic friendly, rebuild required often but is not something you get to do in your garage, has fitment issues (need to use GTR Transfer case). Rough cost after it all = 14K Option 4: Th400 or 4L80E Race prepped transmission with manual valve bodies, and proper stall converter. Pros: Strong, Easy to Repair, Cheap (you can find these things for a couple hundred bucks), driveable on the track and the street without too much compromise, cool options like paddle shift for the 4L80E are available. Cons: Not as fun as 5 or 6 speed, requires external cooling to last long, need numerous parts up front to adapt it. Total Cost up front = Approximately 3-5K based on what transmission is used. Although Option 4 is the cheapest, I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest option. I am looking for your input and experiences to make a decision. I will NOT drift this car, it may see some highspeed stuff and some drag but other than that it will not see a circuit course. SO let's discuss. |

that last set of pics is awesome.
As far as the mission...can we have a refresher on the estimate power you are going to be putting down? Since you are going back to the states I would think whatever option is lower in the hassle ratio might be an important factor. But getting parts in CONUS is easier now than it used to be.

Friend of mine has a PPG box, loves it. However, I like option 1 the best. good cost to reward ratio and the OS geiken set is readily available in the US now (since you know youre bringing this stateside) I would imagine with proper gear treatment, the horsepower shouldnt be a huge problem. youll be right at the bleeding edge, but it should hold.

I would have to choose option 1. If I'm not mistaken OS giken makes higher grade sets for situations like your own.
If not then getrag sounds pretty good to me. You obviously like to spend money on quality, so I say go with the most quality you can get. |

If longevity is what you are looking for 2,3 are out the window automatically. The need to rebuild so often counteracts that. Option 1 seems like it would give you a solid setup, and if you are even considering a 14K option then a 7K whose cons include it costing seven thousand then IMO the only con for option 1 would be replacing the clutch which also means IMO that is the best of the four options

option 1 or getrag...
so what exactly is the purpose of this car then?? No drift, No circuit...so it's gonna be a pimp ass race/street car with the occasional drag strip run, and high speed freeway runs?? looks like it's really comin together. |

Pretty much 96Turbo - I do not want to beat the shit out of it too badly, because I am trying to go back overseas within 1-2 years of my return to the United States. IF that happens for me, I am selling it before I depart since bringing it back to Japan would be very expensive. Brian |
