The gas smell can mean a fuel leak somewhere, in my case it was the old fuel pump hoses crapping out on me. I not to sure about the heat though I thought it was just because of our old cars but my sisters 09 civic gets pretty hot around the gas peddle area as well even though the heat and stuff is not on.
