its not the lens! just put that camera in manual, set the white balance and start shooting along with playing with the setting... the talent will come with experience and time.
The lens I use is a $100 early 90's Nikon AF 70-210mm push pull model on a old Nikon D50 body. My lens is probably over 10 years older than yours...
