I dunno, I don't really care what anyone else things, I do drift becuase its what I like and it's whatI am interested in. If they don't think we are capable of laptimes or whatnot then thats their problem. Knowing what kind of driver you are should be important to you. I guess thats my philosophy, and I am not out to impress anyone.

first off, 'we're' implies that both you, i, and everyone else on this board are 'drifters,' which is very far from the truth.

mmmm.....doubt it. your 'drifted-out' 240 will have a harder time 'wif' an autocross than a properly set up autocross car. and some of those middle aged farts that are talking way too much smack have been doing this for 20-30 years. i also hope you're not implying that you would drift around said course, because the only thing you'd show them is how to knock over a bunch of cones.

i could see where a lot of them were coming from, but the vast majority of them are completely ignorant of what drifting entails, and probably wouldnt care to learn. its people who have a set opinion of something, and arent really open to disscusion very much. that "Young" guy seemed to make some leway, but probably could have said much more in the defense of drifting if he himself was more educated.

frankly, i couldnt care less what other people think (namely groups of closed minded individuals such as that). i enjoy drifting, and thats all that really matters.

I just think that a lot of them are simply uneducated about it. I have never liked drifting, and I used to have the same mentality about it. But since I've hung around here for a while, I know a lot of guys on this board do it and I've realized how much skill it actually takes. Another reason is because maybe they're jealous about how it gets soooo much attention right now. Or maybe it's because they didn't grow up around it, they grew up watching IRL and NASCAR which is "normal" racing to them, and neandrathal(sp?) racing to us. I may develop a liking for drifting one day, maybe one event will change my mind about it.

well, in that aspect, it's true. Most 'drifters' really aren't capable track racers. Go to a track and see for yourself.

I didn't bother reading the entire thread, but to me it sounds like they dont like drifters because:
(a) drifting is slow and takes up other ppl's track time(very true statement)
(b) drifters are usually dumb kids who don't know much about driving
(usually true)

which has NOTHING to do with the amount of skill it takes to drift because WHO CARES!

and the last sentence you wrote just proved why those guys dont like drifters.

You are an idiot, and it is exactly YOU who these "old middle aged farts" don't want at the track. If you actually read the posts, I would have to say that the thread was one of the most open-minded discussion about drifting that can be had by hardcore road racers. And if you want to actually change their minds, the way to do it is not to "smoking the shit outta them" but to show some damn intelligence.

Drifting is indeed the fastest possible way to take a turn. The only reason you dont see people drifting on autocross and such is becouse it puts a tremendous ware on you tires. But if you only doing one or two laps and want the fastest possible lap time, you must drift.

Grip driveing dosent ware your tires down as much as drift driveing, but drift driveing is faster.

You're wrong. Drifting is NOT the fastest way to make a turn. The reason people don't drift at an autocross is because it slows them down. And also, they look like an ass when they slide too far and take out 16 cones, delaying the competition.

so what your talking about is amature drifers and I was talking about professional drifters. No prefessional would over slide and hit 16 cones .

And on the flipside, whois to say a grip driver wont lock his tires during breaking and overslide.

I'm not talking about professional versus amatuer. Drifting is NOT the fastest way to make a turn, novice, professional, amatuer, whatever. PERIOD.

do you have proof to back up that statement, becouse when I was in socal, I took a 3 day drifting course. The trainers where starit from japan and could barely speak english. However, one thing I do remember them saying was "when apexing the turn in the fastest manner, you will be in a placed drift form or 'speed drifting' useing heaviey to full open throttle.

So I seem to think otherwise, but PROVE me wrong.

There is no need, go enter an autocross or track day, drive the line for one lap, then try to drift another, compare times and PROVE yourself wrong.

There is absolutely no reason to have this argument once again, try the good ole search function and you will find all the opinion and fact on this subject has been covered already.

well, Im a really horrible drifter since Im still learning and never tried speed drifting at all.

And like most people, learned grip driveing first becouse it easier and simple to do. I know that for a fact already that if I drifted around the track, I would have a slower time.

I can only answer the question from myself years from now when I reached my peak as a drifter.

Or you could just watch F1, speed world challenge, or go to any auto-x and convince yourself that drifting is slower because you will see nobody doing it! Don't you think someone would already be drifting the entire course if infact it was the faster way around?

Grip simple? Ok buddy, so how many autocrosses have you won?

Drifting is NOT the fastest way around a corner. It has been proven, and it's physically impossible for it be faster seeing as how much friction is created.

Why do you think tires wear so excessively while drifting? Because of all the friction, slowing the car down. That’s why drifting is mostly for show, and is judged by style, technique, etc. As the saying goes, "You can't f**k with physics."

EDIT: Also, just as was mentioned above. Why don't people drift in qualifying? I mean, they only have to do a few laps on fresh tires, so why not?

D1 is considered the best competitive drifting series in Japan. Dozens of teams compete, with scoring based on style, precision and vehicle control rather than speed. Judging is similar to that for figure skating or gymnastics.

Performance and competition, yes. But not so much racing as it is for show. Just like there is speed skating and figure skating. Skill for both, just catagorized differently.

By claiiming drift is faster than grip, you are challenging several motorsports traditions and legacies of very fast grip racing, worldwide.

also I want to point out that some people think 'grip' driving = driving slowly enough not to drift. I've seen people driving super slow and taking a line similar to one on a public road and claiming they are 'gripping.'

Ignore them and what they said. Drifting is an art of sorts and for fun/pleasure/entertainment. Those guys prolly don't even understand that and that is why they are blowing steam. Another reason might be because they are loosing their young demographic to an international phenomenon. Drag racing to drifting is like apples to oranges. Totally different animals.

I have been auto-xing every chance Ive got for the past 2 seasons, I love grip driving... but drift has its place. I used it occasionally on a single cone hairpin, worked much better than grip driving, easier to control with faster exit speeds in my case.

Auto-x is a different beast than most other professional grip racing. Yes, there are some turns on and auto-x course that are faster exicuted with a drift. Kinda like rally, you just have to slide those hairpins, or you'll lose time.

FUCKING MORONS!

Read the EFFING thread instead of making accusation (sp).

FUCK DRIFTING! DRIFTING AIN'T THE FASTEST WAY AROUND CORNERS.

Drifting is more of an art control that should COME to later, i mean later stage. Get your sorry wannabe drifter ass to the track and learn some basic grip racing first, especially car control. You will be able to understand more if you can learn basic line of gripping.

Another ignorant comment. I autocross as well and have yet to reach my full potential seeing as how I've only been to a couple events. I know a guy in B stock who totally kicks ass with his stock S2000. And then sometimes he'll drive his CRX in G stock (the class I'm in) and win. Look at the past winners of G stock class nationals. Mainly underpowered Neons and Celicas which are always thought of as inferior to other cars that run in G stock like V6 mustangs, 240's, Cooper S's, turbo DSM's, and Probe GT's. Now I'm just using G stock as an example here because it's a highly competitive class where I'm from. In other words I'm saying it's a scale of driver skill, you could have the fastest car in grid and still get spanked by a car with a fraction of your power numbers.
