A chain is just a chain. The markings are intended to make it easier. You can just wing it.

The JWT guide is a very valuable resource.

NO the markings are intended so they can be installed to those markings, no winging it, do it right. it works for some people. but i would follow instructions

I agree.

Couldnt I just take off the valve cover, cam gears, front cover, and cam chain, and THEN move my motor to TDC so the lower chain is perfect, and then install the cams as the JWT guide says? Sounds like it'd work to me.
