![]() hey guys
This is my issue stance coilover noise when steering, the front right coilover has this creaking sound like a bad popping sound at times. Happens most noticeably when the car is at a standstill and turning steering wheel. Not sure what the culprit is, I checked the spring perches and those are tight not all loose and what not. Not sure as to what the cause is and would like some help, I have stance lx+ if that matters. Thanks. |

It's the spherical bearing on the top mount.
Try greasing it. It's not moving freely when you turn the wheel, which in turn causes your spring to bind and make those loud popping noises. |

Could be the spring trying to rotate as it compresses and making popping noises.
I know my GR+ springs do that now. |

oh ok, i'm going to try to grease it. Guess another silly Question what kind of grease should I use? and do I need to take the whole coilover out? or can i just put the grease on the top bearing and just turn the steering wheel around to "lube it"

Grease on the bearing probably won't work, since the tolerance between the bearing and the race are pretty small, I just don't think grease will get down in there.
Try like PB Blaster, as it won't evaporate like WD40 will. Here's what I did when I thought my bearings were a little tight. Car was already on jack stands front and rear, and the front assembly was off, so the coilover was attached only at the top via the 3 nuts on the strut tower. Spray a little bit of PB Blaster on the bearing, and then grab the bottom of the coilover and just swivel it around a bit until you can feel it loosen up a little. Just keep doing this and you should be OK. That bearing isn't supposed to turn when the weight of the car is on it, and you go to turn the steering wheel. If you look at the OEM top hat assembly, you will see how the whole thing turns. Ideally, that's what you'd want from an aftermarket upper mount, but there isn't one out there quite like that, so the next best thing for you to do would just be to get some of those Swift Springs composite washers to go between your spring and the spring collars to reduce the friction. |

My stance coilovers did the same thing. I tried all these "hopefully this will work" fix methods and nothing worked. Then I thought about it and came up with these... QA1 Precision Products 7888-109 - QA1 Coil-Over Shock Thrust Bearing Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com
Ever since then I havent had a pop/bind. It does require a little bit of work to get them on. The perch where the top of the spring sits is just over 2.500" So you have to sand/file the perch down and then these will slide nice and snug onto the perch. Overall, pretty cheap/easy fix. This needs stickied. |

Only bad thing about those is that they're open, and thus require constant cleaning.
For a daily driven car, that's way too much of a PITA for more people to deal with. |

It's the spring moving around or unevenness on the bottom of the spring. Turn the bottom collar 1/4 up. I called stance about this when I first got my coils and yes its super common and no its not hurting anything. I just left it and it went away in a couple thousand miles after the springs settled.

Stance told me to flip them and see if it goes away. They also said you can sand the edge of the end of the spring. They were even nice enough to replace them for me free of charge if i couldn't get it right, but 1/4 preload should keep it from moving around and making the popping noise.

Technically, whether you preload or don't preload the spring while the car is up in the air should be irrelevant on whether the spring will "move around" or not when the car is down on the ground, as the weight of the car is now applied, and all the springs are compressed into their "natural state".
That little bit of preload wouldn't do much. |
