sr20 in s14 transmission dust boot issue

Ok. So I recently installed a redtop sr into my s14. I forgot to remove the dust boot from either the driveshaft or transmission. I drove the car with them still on for about 2.5 miles before I figured out what was going on and headed back home. I removed the dust boot on the trans and the dust cover on the driveshaft.

My problem is that I am still having a grinding/screeching noise coming from the rear section of the trans, where the slip yoke fits up. Im wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

Im wondering if I ruined something in the tailsection of the transmission or if the problem could be the driveshaft going bad. A lot of heat was cause from the two dust covers rubbing.

thanks for any help. I did search just couldnt find anybody with the exact problem.

you don't need that big round 'dust seal'...only the rear trans seal is important.

grinding? have you checked for bad U joints or something rubbing against the driveshaft?

the big dust boot is removed so is the little metal shield on the driveshaft. It doesnt look like anything is rubbbing, but it does sound like it.

The noise will go away and come back, but is pretty constant at low speeds.

Havent checked for bad U joint on the driveshaft yet, will do that tomorrow. Not really sure how to check. How much lateral movement is acceptable?

not to much an issue, you'll know the u joint being bad if you have servere play, or if you remove the shaft you can feel it being 'notchy' sort to speak.

E brake cables arnen't laying on the shaft are they? dust shields rubbing anywhere?

nope nothing is rubbing.

are there any bearing in the rear section of the trans. It sounds like something in the tail section (bearing) is bad and scraping?

Well Ive bought a spare sr trans and spec stage 3 clutch in hopes of fixing the problem. I guess ill find out in a couple of weeks where the problem was.

Main Shaft bearings are known to fail in the sR transmissions, so that could be it...it's usualy the first main bearing though, near where the bellhousing and case meet up. Never had a rear one fail on me, but that's not o say it's not impossible hehe.
