How often to change fluids?

well, i had been doing transmission fluid every 60K according to the fsm but after the second time they said there was a lot of metallic shavings that came out of the transmission when they dumped the fluid. Thats when I got a new transmission because they said the bearings were bad and he told me to replace the fluid every 30K. I have used valvoline synthetic dot 4 or 5 for the brakes so should I continue using that or is it possible to switch back to dot 3 (which I assume is not synthetic) for the brakes?

For trans go with 30k
Brake and clutch ideally once a year
Dont use Valvoline its crap use Castrol instead
