polishing how to's?

I did a brief search of google and didn't really find what I wanted, I've got some free time, and would like to polish up some of the spare parts I've got around here (valve cover, intake manifold etc) does anyone know of a site that explains for the mentally challenged? I mean I understand the basics, start with a high grit and move to a fine grit, then polish with metal polish, but is that it?

thats pretty much it just takes some elbow grease
