As dorkidori said, there were a few redtops with fins. Mine wasn't head swapped either, still has the stock head gasket, and is running on the 62 ECU that came with it.

That is the only explanation then. It appears the same part number was used across all S13 heads so they never did change it when they switched to the fin design.

I just picked up my s13 sr20det swap yesterday and it has the fins on the head.
I assume my engine is the 94 to 98 version blacktop? One other thing... once i did a bit of research it looks like 180sx were built up to 1998 in japan?? Does that mean in 95 to 98 nissan of japan offered s13 and s14 chassis?? That just struck me as odd, I thought in 95 the s13 was replaced by s14s... can anyone clarify?

If I am not mistaken, the 180sx (our hatchack) was made until 98 in Japan. The S13 Silvia(our coupe) was replaced by the zenki s14.
180sx =/= silvia.

so lets say.... in 1997 for example... You could buy a S13 hatchback BRAND new off the lot....as well as a s14??
i swear man the japanese do strange things... In comparison to here in america once a generation is evolved to a new body style the older previous body is no longer sold.

If redtop Sr20's have 54C cast into the pistons, all of these engines are officially the same internally aside from different heads. Seriously who the fuck cares about plastic vs metal back timing chain guides. It's a service part. All of the pistons and rods melt and bend in the same exact way in all of these engines.
The head is the only difference. If you don't believe me put an s14 / s15 SR head on an s13 block and run an external oil feed to the VTC gear. There won't be any performance gain or loss compared to an oem s14 sr. (Using identical engine management / fuel / turbo setup) I'd bet money on it. |
