State inspections
(im sure this has been asked before, i did a search but i didnt kind anything related to state inspection.)
sr20s are obviously illegal, as are many of the modifications that go along with them. its just part of the game. But say you have and old 240 hatchback with a swap, front mount, rollbar(not cage) safetly harnesses (but its have stock seatbelts in place), deep dish rims, and lets say a few gauges (obviously a modified car), but everything like brakes, tires, mirrors, blah blah, its all in good shape. I live in va where we dont have emission tests just state inspection tests so thats really the only concern(other than police of course). Will you most likey pass, or would the guy tell you that the car needs to have the stock engine to pass or something like that? do you guys with sr20s pass inspection with no problem? its just something i have to consider before i invest alots of time and money into a 240 project, because when i do, it will be a daily driven street car.. thanks guys. |

uhhhhh....uhhhhhhh....
virginia- YOU DO HAVE EMISSIONs TESTS! i'm no mathmagician, but you must have just gotten your license or something because you have never taken a car to get an emissions test and/or inspection. virginia is an easy state to pass a swap in. i'll sum it up in 3... 1- get some connections at certified inspection shops 2- shop around 3- if all else fails, go to the sticks and find you a shop where they've never heard of "nissan" "engine swap? ya mean like a 305?"

Ask a shop. In Maryland there's a state police line we can call to ask about inspection standards, look for something like that.
Wheels that extend beyond the bodywork should fail this type of inspection. Suspension depends on height... too low will fail, but it's hard to be too low and still streetable in most states. Tuck the harnesses out of the way or remove them temporarily - it's legal to have them, but a shop that wants to screw with you or isn't familiar with the laws could fail them. Roll bars are legal in VA as far as I know, all the Miata guys have them. Euro/JDM headlights including H4 conversions will fail because they don't have the little nipples to attach aiming equipment. Exhaust systems need to be reasonably quiet and exit behind the passenger compartment. As for the engine, it depends. I don't know if a VA safety inspection includes any emissions equipment checking. In upstate NY, they look for all the necessary emissions equipment, and although they don't look for the stock engine explicitly, if the new engine has radically different placement of components, it might fail. Also since SR swaps involve removing the AIV, that could be a problem. |

its just inspection. and yes i am a new driver but i have taken my car for an inspection, thats why i was asking. I currently have integra with a jdm headlight swap, they didnt say anything about the head lights but i had to remove my piaa fogs because they werent wired into the ecu ![]() so i was thinking if they get all butt hurt over fogs not wired into the ecu theyd probably get a little pissy about nothing at all being stock on the car. |

that's because the angle of the beam was probably "good enough" or they didn't check it. i know in nova they've sniffed my hole before. ![]() can't wait for my 240 to get out here, but must wait till end of october. in the mean time, i'm gonna get this "200sx" ( ![]() http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MakeTrack=true

Dude, just find a gas station with a working garage and they'll pass you. I was a bit worried about my car, you can only tell it's modified by the front mount but honestly 80% of the places won't know any better. My local gas station passed me no prob. And also there is no smog test in the Richmond area.
