S14 non-abs R200 w/ S15 HLSD + 3.91 J30 R&P?

I have the S15 HLSD with the correct 6 bolt output shafts to match.

I also got a complete J30 R200 diff (5 bolt outputs) from a '93 or 94 to use the 3.91 ring & pinion.

I have a non-abs S14 (stock driveshaft). I know the HLSD should be a direct fit, but since i added a good amount of power, the 4.08s seem a bit too short which is why i went for the 3.91s.

I'm about to tear the whole rear end down soon to do all the bushings poly/aluminum and put together my ideal R200, but now i'm a bit unclear if the J30 R&P is going to work with the "ring thickness" this and "housing length" that, then J30 axels or different driveshaft if the correct housing is longer? I thought i was confident before i bought it, but it'd be nice to make sure before i do if anyone cares to confirm or deny for me that the J30 R&P is gonna fly...

can anyone that's actually don't this combo or something like it chime in please. I thought this would all go together into my s14 VLSD diff, but the 3.91 ring is 1/4" longer than the 4.08 and won't allow the whole diff to fit into place...unless I just have something set wrong.

Do you mean a .250" wider? You may have to change out shim stacks to get the unit to fit in there correctly. It's not always a direct swap/fit.

yeah, it's .25" wider. there's the 2 small washers that are maybe 1-2mm wide and one 'larger' spacer that's closer to 6.4mm or .25". I didn't even try installing without that spacer or even measuring it yet. do I have to have some kind of spacer if it fits really tight without it (if I don't have to just change the spacer size)?

You don't have to have a shim/spacer if it fits tight without it, but it needs to be setup up right. If you have an FSM, I'd read through the differential setup section for specifics.

deciding to reassemble at 12:15 am was a mistake, it was just a matter of getting the spacer and washers in the correct order and took no time.
