mounting harnesses on rear pillar bar
Is this a good idea? Do you think a rear pillar bar would be strong enough to hold you if you ever needed it? I was thinking about maybe buying one and welding on some tabs and hooking a 4pt harness to it.

I've been told that you need to mount the harness to shoulder level or @ shoulder level. Mounting below the shoulders, if you get into an accident, the harness will pull down on you, forcing your back to compress and injuring you. If you look at what forces can apply in an accident it does make some sense, and harness mounts built into a cage all are at shoulder level.
Just what I heard, something to think about. |

meme, thats how i mounted mine
but as bayarea240 says, it needs to be shoulder level, i think the recommended amount is at least 45 degrees. but then again, you theoretically need a 5 point anyway to prevent submarining, and even if you do have a 5 point mounted correctly, if you don't have a roll cage, you're screwed in a rollover, and you have a roll cage, well, we wouldn't be having this discussion on where to mount your harness ![]()

Dont mount it on a rear piller bar, its a really bad idea... I would either use the factory rear seat points or a roll bar/cage w/ a hanress bar.

don't use anything but a harness bar, including the stock mounting points. if your stock seat breaks or bends (and shit you wouldn't believe how much a seat gives during a collision) and the harness is mounted right behind the seat, parallel with the floor, its going to hold you right where you are no matter what. If its mounted to the rear seat mounts, and the seat brakes, you are gonna get tossed around.
And, if you complain "but I don't have a bar to mount it to..." well, 4 point or 5 point harnesses hold your head upright, so when the car rolls over your head is going to get smashed in by the roof. So you really shouldn't use them unless you have a roll bar anyway. Which gives you a convenient place to mount them. problem solved! |
