Prepping an sr20
95% of sr20s look like hell right after they have been purchased. who even knows where they have been. what exactly needs to be changed from when you purchase the motor, to when its ready to go into the car? im guessing the usual spark plugs, distributor, plugs, injectors, check the the rubber hoses, etc but heres where i see the dilemma. those engine have been sitting, non running for so long, i would think the intake mani. would be filled with dirt, the cylinders would be all gunked up and you couldnt just replace the stuff and fire it up because u'd end up with a fucked up new again. i could be wrong on this but give me your opinion.

filled w/ dirty? what the intake throttle body was left open?
definatley change to new thermostat and water pump new clutch all gaskets (you wont regret it--you will if you have to change them after the motor is in) ALL fluids (duh) replace as much as you can and that includes a lot on your car too (fuel filter and so forth) |

I'd add to the list:
-Front main seal -Rear main seal -Thermostat -Clean intake manifold -On first oil change, run an engine cleaner (Motul Engine clean, seafoam, whatever)

If your really worried, drop the oil pan and have a look at the internals. Get a FSM and measure bearing clearances if you think the motor has been beat on.

and i guess i could clean the im and tb with some throttle body cleaner, but people dont really bother with the cylinders at all? or is that not really an issue? there would be any negative affect from it being so dry in there for so long? (ie scratching the cylinders on the first start up becaue of lack of lubrication or debris)

Use Seafoam or other engine cleaner to clean out any debris that is in there. If your worried about starting it dry, put a few (and I mean only a few) drops of oil in the cylinders, pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the motor over a few times to lube it before you start it for the first time.

im basically just trying to get a read from you guys on if worrying about the cylinders is a legitimate concern, or would it just be a paranoid thing to do. would you guys worry about if (or when you did) you were swapping an sr into your car? would a professional shop who was installing it worry about it? |

now you don't HAVE to replace waterpump, i have 4 friends w/ srs who have ran their car on the original waterpump for 2 years,
-Ditch the clutch fan -Check plugs before u change them -New fuel filter -Check FPR -Check knock sensor, (the brass metal on the back if it is discolored like purple or green its blown) -Check compression -Check turbo -Make sure gasket between turbo and xhaust manifold r good, The main thing is to get the $200 gasket kit, i wish i had done that, do all those gaskets and clean every part it would be the cleanest stock sr imaginable. |

thanks for all the help guys, you really covered a lot. so i guess cylinder wise (the only thing im still unsure about) the seafoam treatment is done AFTER the engine is installed and running? then get a compression test, and if im worried on the first start up just give it a few drops of oil. does this sound like all that really needs to be done with the cylinders or am i leaving something out?

most important part, before cranking it up to start, crank it over with ignition components disconnected to prime up your oil system. those bearings need oil before u run it.
