El Paso and Dayton are shocking (newsworthy) because of the random nature of the crimes. People who are killed in inner cities are often in the drug business, violence often comes with the business. People who are not expecting it are suburban families with typical suburban lives. If I get killed walking into advanced auto parts it’s very different then me rolling up on someone on the block.
