Setting Ignition Timing on SR20DET

Not a tuner or professional mechanic.

When checking the ignition timing on the SR20DET, the timing has always been jumpy and never steady at 15+- degrees. Is this normal?

Mechanical timing 0 degrees TDC and CAS has been aligned correctly.

smh its bc ur cheapass keeps changing parts on the sr without retuning

check your tps voltages, closed and open throttle and make sure its holding steady voltage at idle. should be about 0.45v at idle/closed throttle

stock ECU? haven't had to deal with that in a long long time but you need to lock the timing (may have been as simple as unplugging TPS but check the factory service manual.) Once the ECU locks timing it won't jump around when you use the timing light.

Same exact process on standalone ECU's you just lock the timing at the value of choice in the software for the timing sync.

This is a fairly old post, but in case someone finds it in a search:

You have to lock the timing in order to check it. Process for that is fairly simple. Fully warm up the car, best if you can drive it around for 10-15 minutes. Turn off all accessories/lights/hvac/etc. Shut off engine. Unplug the TPS connection, then restart the engine. Rev it to 2k twice and then let the engine settle. It should now be locked on timing and you can check & adjust with a light as expected.

If you have a consult cable and software (like NDSI or similar) there's an option to lock the timing that way, but warm engine-unplug TPS method has worked for us for many years at this point.
