cut the thing down the middle with a hacksaw and when you see metal shavings then stop slide a BF flathead screwdriver into it and pry the damn thing

ok man when vicegrips fail you fail, heres what i do tho, go get another set of visegrips, tighten the ones that will go on the knob, but tighten them so far you cant even grip it, then use the other pair of vise grips to close the pair that is on the knob, then turn,

Taking off the stock shifter always works best when it's warm or hot outside. So if anything, use a heat gun, then use your bare hands. That's what I did (not with a heat gun though).

Assuming you won't be using this knob again, drill a hole horizontally through the top (careful not to go through the shaft) big enough to fit a screwdriver in there. The longer handle the screwdriver has, the better. Stick the screwdriver in there and see if that method works.

Have you thought about explosives? Mmmm Dynomite! If its really being as rough as you say you might want to inlist a friend to help you. If you wrench too hard you can hurt that rubber bussing you feeel pushing back at you, and while this wont be the end of the world it will make for some uber sloppy shifts. Get a friend with another set of vice grips, go in different directions and kick that knobs ass!

On a serious note, a strap wrench is probably what you want to use. I've used vice grips and a pipe wrench and both worked but when all else fails, a strap wrench will grip and turn cylindrical things. Another thing to consider is if you do get something that will grip and it still won't budge just get some more leverage. Grab a pipe or something and use it as a cheater bar.

The factory one is screwed on with some stuff like JB Weld (or its equivalent)....i just wrenched mine off, if you dont mind messing it up then go for it. Or you could try a strapwrench, etc.... ? Give it a whack.
