my drivetrain shakes a lot in 1st and 2nd.. help?
so i just swapped out a ka24e automatic and dropped in a ka24de 5spd... and when i drive it in 1st and 2nd gear, in the low rpm range (i dont know exactly because my tach doesnt work) the shifter shakes slightly, then more and more violently... and then i hear/feel some thing bumping against the underside of the car... i'm assuming its the transmission or driveshaft or something of the like.
anyone know what it could be? i dont think its a tranny mount and i think my driveshaft should be balanced... but what could possibly cause this? also, my tach doesnt work. anyone ever had a tach stop working on them? i swapped in a DOHC gauge cluster with the motor.. first time i started it, the tach jumped from 0 to 1500......... then never moved again lol |

the driveshafts sound like they're not the same length, and are under load. you might need to seperate the half-shafts and put your auto rear half shaft + manual front halfshaft.
dohc cluster is not the same as the sohc.

I also agree that it sounds like the tranny bushing. Did you reuse your ka24e bushing and not replace it >? i would replace that first.
if it still happens after that then tell us and we shall go from there. |

Make sure the paint mark on the back of the driveshaft lines up with the mark on the diff to get it close to balanced.

^ the auto and manual driveshafts are completely different. the halves are different lengths/sizes... so if i mixed it , it wouldnt fit up right. and yeah i replaced the sohc cluster with dohc because the sohc tach doesnt work with the dohc motor... but .. apparently neither does the dohc tach ![]() i did not change the mounts or bushings. i dont know much about the drivetrain so im gunna have someone more knowledgable look at it or take it to a shop and see what they say ... when i have money... haha cuz right now i cant afford to take it to jiffy lube |

you're wrong echo, the front half is the one that is different sizes from auto to manual
rear halves only vary from ABS to non-ABS as long as it's the same chassis |

multishaft setups are balanced together, changing/mismatching propelor shafts will be f@cked. most even have a sticker on the shaft that u must replace both sides or have rebalanced. |

the other thing is propellor shaft imbalance/length is proportionate to wheel speed, not ENGINE speed...so like the others said check ur tranny mount first, as well as motor mounts^^

he said that 'cuz when we did my swap, we ended up HAVING to mismatch my DS.. s14manual front, s14 auto rear.. I got no problems. I had the same vibration using the entire s14 manual DS.. I think the rear section was ABS 'cuz the fit was too tight.. i had to put in the front, rear.. and then push the center up until it 'locked in'

working with multishaft propellor setups at work id agree that the marks matter... maybe on a short setup like a s13 it wont, but u should still put it back the way it was balanced as.
do u switch main journal caps around even though they have been line honed and marked? perhaps things worked out fine, but the idea of balancing is to negate bad forces(reduce wear on bearings/bushings), which u prolly cant feel. perhaps im too critical having worked with propellor shafts in 6 foot lengths, but still, put it back the way it was balanced. |

Yup driveshaft not balanced and it could have esily been out of phase...Mark it before taking it apart it saves the hasle.
