That means base timing should be 16 degrees before top dead center. The retards the whole timing curve by ~4 degrees...which is not ideal, but a cheap way to run boost safely without retuned ECUs or MSD BTM.

The pulley has marks:

|....|....|....|....|....|
-5..0...+5..10..15..20

To set the base timing, car should be warm, and you have to unplug the TPS and set the idle to ~700. Only way to set base timing properly...these steps disable the ECU control and keep it from messing with the timing,

Using the pin near the pulley, set the timing to the intended degree by rotating the distributor.

Stock is 20, so you need to knock is back a few degrees...you have to eyeball it.

That's it, pretty easy.

Im also doing a kat (sohc), i set my timing to 14 degrees, but Im only running an 8:1 fmu, fuel pump, and stock injectors , and 6lbs of boost so i needed it to be alittle more safe. When I unpluged my tps, my idle did not change, so i set the timing, and pluged it back in, and my idle stayed the same around 700-730 rpm Is the ka24e stock timing 17 degrees?

Stock KA24E timing is 15...plus, the static compresison ratio is lower, so you don't need to drop the base as much to keep it safe.

At 6psi, I'd bet you're OK with just a degree or 2 of base retard (13-14 BTDC)...

YES!

Base timing is what the ECU uses to determine total timing advance...so if your base timing is off by 5 degrees, you'll either blow it up, or have no power.

Set your SR to 10 BTDC and see if you can make any decent power...even at 14psi.

Set your SR to 20 BTDC base and 14psi and you'll be buying a new block...

Base timing is CRITICAL for decent performance...

...and 1 degree of timing is actually a lot.

Red Suns- You are an idiot. They are two totally different motors, and they use totally different base timing values. Can you not accept that?

SOHC KA = 15ºBTDC
DOHC KA = 20ºBTDC

OT!!

Which leads me to believe that nissan was stupido for building the DOHC engine. They have a claimed 10 horsepower over the SOHC...but if you bumped the compression to what the DOHC has and up the timing 5 degrees, you'll find that extra 10 horses out of the single cam. All they had to do was re-design the cam for better high end.

I heard that the SOHC's had weak heads, and that the threads tend to strip.
Just what I've heard, I'm happy with my DE.

I have determined that the cam journal is one very delcate part of the head, but regular oil changes will save that. Other than that the head is designed quite well. Intake and Exhaust ports only are already pretty smooth but have two casting lines in them. I believe in the 12valve SOHC and by spring I will get 300+ HP out of it.
