02 sensor question
s13 blacktop. ok guys, need your experience. does the 02 sensor only come into play at idle or could it cause my car to run like shit and die if it were bad. seriously, ive checked everything else including sensors and wires, leaks and fuel pressure, and this is the only thing i think i have found bad. the FSM gives ohmage for a heated o2 sensor, but mine is not heated. its says to shoot 3-1000 ohms, yes thats right, on pins a and c. mine shoot completely open. need help seriously, any ideas or suggestion are also appreciated. btw, no other codes expect 55 from ecu.

well how do i tell if its a heated 02 sensor. this could be wrong, but i was told that s13 blacktops do not have heated 02 sensors. to tell you the truth, i dont know anything about the difference or why you need a heated one. maybe it is heated, how do i tell? its got three wires going into it but thats about all i know.

ok well if the 3 wires means it is heated, then thats what i have. its shooting open, so i guess i need to change it per FSM. thanks for the help, ill update on the fix. can anyone explain the reason it needs to be heated, like i said, i dont anything about that.

An unheated sensor has to sit close to the exhaust port to be brought up to temperature. When you heat up the sensor artificially, it doesn't have to sit that close to the exhaust port, and you can move it further downstream. This helps protect the sensor from heat cycles that an unheated sensor sees.
Another benefit is that heated sensors come up to temperature more quickly. An unheated sensor has to wait for the engine to come up to temperature for the exhaust to heat up the sensor. So the heated sensor kicks in sooner. The turbo produces so much heat that you want to move the sensor further downstream and heat it artificially. Your S13 blacktop has a heated sensor. You can tell by the 3 wires. The 2 outside wires are for the heating element, and the middle wire is sensor signal. |
