what happens when you clutch kick 4th with big tires
You take your clutch with 565 ftlb of tq capacity and destroy it...
Luckily the guys over at competition clutch where able to get me setup up with a new Twin plate clutch that will make sure that never happens. In the mean time, i was bored tonight so decided to drop the tranny, and get everything ready.... 240sx hover conversion. ![]() draining the tranny fluid thats been in there for like 3 years as to not make a mess ![]() and boom goes the dynamite... took about an hour and a half to drop with some help from the wife. ![]() heres a picture of my baller aluminum driveshaft, its one of those things that you spend 500.00 dollars on that no one ever sees, so look at it haha..... ![]() heres the flywheel, its not bad still useable with a resurface. Not that ill need it as the twin plate comes with its own flywheel. ![]() ![]() Pressure plate and disc fare a little worse... ![]() ![]() some pieces of the disc chipped off and the disc looks glazed... but whatever. Got it in, heres some pics...... the box... ![]() whats in the box.... ![]() Here it is in all its twin plate glory..... looks super beefy.. ![]() As requested... Here is the weight of the twin plate clutch and flywheel. 21.8 lbs ![]() Compared to the previous disc and pressure plate.... XTD chromemoly 13lb flywheel and spec pressure plate with act 6 puck solid hub 31.2 ![]() Here it is disassembled. ![]() 9+lbs of rotating weight is an incredible amount, it should rev SUPER Fast!!!! Got the flywheel in, simple enough Factory tq settings are 69 ftlbs ![]() Pressure plate and disc went in smoothly with supplied pilot bearing, and alignment tool. ![]() Then it came to the tranny, i used to be able to loosen the motor mounts and tilt the motor back to get the tranny in. But the new intake manifold had to had to be removed in order to get the engine to tilt back because it would crash into the firewall. At least the old one for all its ugliness cleared the firewall with enough room. But the long and the short of it, is its in. ![]() Preliminary report.. This clutch ROCKS!!!!!! I didnt know what i was missing before. The engine revs up faster, due to the lighter weight. The up shifting and down shifting is way quicker than before, and man o man does this thing grab. I gave it a clutch kick in 4th at about 30 mph and it just lit up the tires. Now i understand how 240's can break axles as hard as this grabs. As for the drivability, Ive gotten plenty used to the 6 puck unsprung disc from before and while its more aggressive its not terrible for a what it is, i had no problem getting the car going, it didn't even stall on me once. But then again its a light car with V8 torque an there aren't any hills in flat florida besides, its a race car. As for the rattle, which was expected with a twin plate, its very faint, much better than i thought it would be, you can hear it but you have to really listen for it. Car is all done and ready for tomorrows drift event so i will have a more detailed report tommorw on the track, as i really could get on it too hard on the street. OK... so after a while progress report. Drifted awesome, street driving is more than civil, compared to what people say about 4 bangers, but i guess thats cause I got v8 torque behind it. Grabs super hard, and has held up to some good abuse so far. The only real complicated part of this whole swap was the pedal stop, i basically took a couple of bolts welded them together and screwed them into the back of the pedal stop the movement, and not let it over extend. They where highly helpful and took all my calls/ emails for tech support. All in all i highly recommend this clutch if your going for big power, or even if you want a regular clutch. Best part was they where highly affordable. Competition Clutch

very minimal, you can't even hear it from inside the car, only with the door open and putting your head low towards the ground.

Are those the sintered Iron discs you're running? How many street miles/slipping is that clutch supposed to be able to handle?
With the new found reviness I think it's time for a new video/soundclip! A stock Corvette clutch/flywheel weighs 52#! This is the coolest way to loose 33# ever!

I think they are sintered iron with copper mix....
As for street driveablilty, i have heard about evos putting 10-15k miles on them on the street. As for my observations, each disc is about as thick as regular clutch and theres two of them, so as long as it doesn't slip i don't think ill need to replace it for a long while. Mind you I've gone through 3 clutches in three years so even if it last 1.5 years id be happy at this point. It doesn't really slip lol, it just grabs. Though since its got torque it doesn't drive bad at all. As for vid, best i can do now is this one....

I did dig the Bon Jovi. I rewatched you leaving the line a few times, you left quick! So if it doesn't slip, does that mean that you often get a little chirp of the rear tires leaving from a stop?

That's a great looking twin-plate ~ no springs to stop chatter, but if you say it's not bad, that's rad. It's not just the weight savings (20lbs for a twin plate is LIGHT) but the reduced MOI that makes it easier to spin. I wish mine was that small (diameter).
At $1200 or so, that's very affordable, similar to the ACT I run.

the car is still around.. i drive it all the time. Track, street, everything i just don't post that much because it doesn't break often. As a matter a fact I've been bored lately and have been contemplating upping the boost to 10-12 lbs to see what happens.
I actually drove it today and snapped this pic. I still have the work wheels btw ![]()

How did the Porsche intake pan out? I remember seeing a preliminary dyno chart but I thought you were going to play with things and see if you couldn't get more out of it.

yea theres more to come soon. Theres a new project I'm working on that i won't be posting about till its complete so thats getting my attention right now. Once that is done, the vh is coming out of the black car and a new built one is going in with heads and cams and 14 lbs of boost.
Kingkilburn. The porsche manifold works great, makes tons more power under the curve. Just no more peak power, i really suspect I'm at the limit of the stock cams, then again its only 7.5-8 psi of boost so i can't complain to much. Heres the before and after dyno from a few pages ago. ![]() ![]() Edit... I'm all for teasers this is the new beast thats coming.... ![]()

So boss! Love the LS intake retro fit!
EDIT: Went back and read the build instead of scrolling thru pics, so the intake is from a Porsche? Crazy! Last edited by onehundredoctane; 11-01-2012 at 12:44 PM.. |
