my friend invited me to google+ last night but I'm confused on how the whole circle thing works.

It automatically suggested ppl to me which i've added to circles, but are they aware ive "Requested to be friends"? It also recommended ppl that dont even have an @google (@yahoo.com, @hotmail.com, @randomazz$hit.com). I've added non-google friends to my circles but what do they see on their end?
