I'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone who came out and supported this event weather you drove,
cheered, spectated or whatever. Without you all these events wouldn't be a success.
I don't have all of the results for all the different run groups but for now the N/A KA class result are:
1st place. Matt Johnson. 1:30.17
2nd place. John Hartendorp. 1:32.20
3rd place. Tom Flowers. 1:32.81
4th place Vanessa Lam. 1:34.12
5th place. Ray Diaz. 1:34.43

Hopefully we'll be able to post more results within a few days. Again thank you all for being there
and I hope everyone had almost as much fun as I did!!!!

KA class was fun! Least no one really got blown out between 1st, 2nd, etc. etc. The top 5 all drove well (myself included, hehe) but I think it was just getting out and running with each other that was the most fun. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks much to driftday for putting on this gripday time attack...look forward to doing it again next year!

Oh, and thanks Tom for bringing the cookies! They were great too!

I forgot to ask how many seconds you won by! LOL! I had heard from my buddy that the track is faster since they re-paved it, would you agree with that? I haven't been to streets in like a year and a half...

Well, winning by two seconds is a blowout IMO. In real racing two seconds might as well be a minute... I am so bummed that I missed this event two god damn years in a row. I guess I'll just have to make it up at the redline time attack at buttonwillow next year.

Gosh... I got beat by a girl by 0.31 seconds.... i think its time to get better tires than my direzza street tires (i should try your R1R tires onetime)... or at least gut my interior... or get headers or a one piece drive shaft... can't really do much on a KA on a budget... or maybe i should just stop drifting every corner... ya that should do that next time...

It was still fun playing cat and mouse chase with you Vanessa... of course you were the cat I was the mouse with the pink helmet since I was sliding all over the place.... I really need to learn how not to drift on a grip event...

Awesome event as always... I had loads of fun and i'm pretty satisfied with my 1:34.43 time since I was aiming to beat my old 1:36.50 time I had earlier this summer. (maybe the c-west headlight cover did help give me that extra .5hp)

Awesome pictures as always larry!!! thank you!!!:

Paul2x... you are fast as hell... I actually have a video of you passing all 4 of us 240sx on the straight... of course if you watch the video and blink, you'll miss it... (currently uploading it right now at youtube) I now know what that 2x stands for on your username.

I can't wait for the next streets event...

LOL, Thanks very much. Yeah I think w/ some more chassie tuning 21's are right around the corner. Congrats on breakin through the 36' barrier, and to the rest of the KA podium. Matt's 1.30.xx, KA record?? Think so.. Freakin Awesome!

My Recap:
With a fresh tune from Koji at Drift Speed, Fresh alighment, and Fresh set of Hankook's I was all set for Sunday's event.

Car Set-up:
I tried a few new things for this event.
First off was fresh tune from Drift speed Netting roughly 60whp+ and 30whp in midrange than before, the car was set on hp, and running better than ever. (Thanks Koji!)
Traction was always an issue since the turbo upgrade just due to power deverly but my friends at Hankook set-me up w/ fresh set of their Z214 (Dot r-comps) in (hard/endurance) compound which are essentially like shaved Nt01 (same compound i was told) would be a good fit for lightweight S-chassie. Size was 245/40/17 square, which was a little different from the 235/255 combo I usually run, but allowed me to run slightly less aggressive camber up front than normal.

On track:
On track the car felt pretty loose at first, but with new power and tires and 60 deg temps it was expected. Turns out the low track temps, and light weight car, and only few hot laps per session werent enough to get the tires up to proper temps. I constantly was air'n down the Hankooks from 33, 31, 30, 29 etc to get more heat in them. Each time adding more grip and stability.
On the power side I also turned boost down from 1.25 bar to .8 bar which dropped about 70-80whp but kept the car much strighter.
In the the end, I figured I needed at least 3-4 hot laps before i got any heat into the tires and from 4laps up times began to drop. Which resulted in a best of 1.22.3xx on my 6th lap, which was good enough for 1st place in SR class and possibly 1st overall. (final results pending )

Next time around, I will try running the tires at 27psi or so to get heat in them sooner or running softer compound

At the end of the day big thanks everyone for their help, couldn't do it with out you!:
Hankook -for the fresh kicks
DriftSpeed Crew - Koji, Quok, Masa for being super cool dudes and S-chassies masters
AE Performance - Hommies! Suspension tuning Guru's and parts galor
Etnies- for the fresh kicks on my feet =)
Dynamic Autosport: Eddie, Mike, Eugene, Thanks for keepin mad parts in stock and being open on SAt!

Really??? From my experience you want to run more cold pressure on cold days to bring the tires up faster. I've never heard of anyone dropping pressure in order to help the tires come in sooner. Are you sure that you just weren't running higher pressure then the tires were designed to run??? I mean on our hoosier race slicks we ran 13psi/16psi cold almost all the time. I run in the high 20's/low 30's with my "street" tires. I would talk to the hankook boys if I was you because that is exactly opposite of everything that I know about tire pressures.

Congrats on the time, that's some commendable driving and car set-up. I wanna see a time sheet in the teens though... That is honestly my eventual goal at SOW CW.

Thanks Paul for the compliment on the "KA Record" time. I honestly don't know what the best KA time at Streets is. I'll have an SR for next year so we'll see what I can do then.

I wanted to also thank Naoki and Grip/Drift Day ppl for putting on the event and everybody who came out. It was good to meet some of you and perhaps I'll check in to Zilvia a little more than my normal once/yr.

I was using ADVAN Neovas (AD07).

This is correct for slicks, my street tire logic below is incorrect for the tires Paul had. My error. To get the most out of those tires, aero and possibly more suspension tuning is necessary to get the right amount of heat in them for use in such short sessions. Also, a softer compound would have been ideal for colder outside temps given the short run times.

Regarding tire pressures (there are a number of variables to consider but here is a simple version).... The sessions weren't very long (20 min at most) and with the race tires Paul was using, it isn't as much about pressure as it is about getting them hot so he was correct in bringing pressures down because that increases contact patch and even (if low enough) sidewall roll over but the benefit is that working the tire harder generates more heat (=grip). Without tire warmers, it is almost beneficial to have gone out with low pressure (not underinflated) to work the tires, come into hot pit, air the tire to your ideal cold pressure +1-2psi and go back out to set times. Higher cold pressure wouldn't have helped the tire generate more heat.

But this is difficult in such short sessions and potential traffic. Regardless, Paul was quick and I think he was able to get some clean laps in because you can't do a 1:22.xx with traffic. More time probably could have been had by finding the happy zone for the tires.

GripDay 2 - Day 2 PhotoSet

Great event!

My oh my Larry, what a big..... LENS you have. Very nice! By no means does my 100 dollar lens contend in Larrys league (maybe skills for that matter?). Regardless, enjoy the set. These are also available large format hi-res. If I have missed your car, please pm me with the number, make, model, color... and I'll post them. Enjoy!

you car sounds so good... you look pretty good out there for your first time out...

don't be hesitant to meet every person... I usually meet the nicest people in events like this than anywhere else... did you only drive the Saturday event?

Besides my tools, I too only has one set of wheels which is what I drove up there with and drove home with... which is also the same set i drive on everyday to and from work....

Sorry paul, I was not sure how much power you were pushing, driftspeed told me it was around 400hp when they tuned it but i just remembered now that you did drop the boost to keep her straight.. Your driving skill makes you look like you were pushing 400+hp... lol...

lol np i was just messin.

Koji was the man and did pull 403hp on his dyno and 378 tq at 1.25 but never got around to it at the track. Tried 1.0 even and that still was tough to handle on corner exits. Would have been nice to have a scramble button for the strights though =)
