Ok, I am a college kid as I am sure many of you are. I have a really good job and I really want to start building a SR motor but I am forced to live in an apartment complex atleast for another year before I get my own place. Have any of you overcome this obstacle? I don't know many people at FSU yet so I really can't work at a freinds place. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am going out of mind with ideas and I need to build something!!!!!! Thanks a lot guys.

A lot of cities have places where you can take your car. You rent the garage for the day and all the equipment is suplied that you would need. As far as building an engine though...well that takes a lot more time so your best bet would be to check classified and phone up one of these places. Or look around for renting someone's garage(personal). I don't imagine you need tons and tons of space so find someone with a small garage that they aren't using and see if they would be willing to rent it on a monthly basis.

I do most of my work on base at the auto hobby shop. It's one of the nice perks of being in the Air Force. Fully supplied garage where you can pull in and work on your car, engines, whatever. See if there are any military guys there that can hook you up.

Luckily i live in a House now that has a huge 2 car garage, but i can associate with your problem when i lived in an Apartment. I always had to go to a friends house because as soon as i popped the hood the neighbors would call the main office and someone would come question what i was doing..I would suggest making some new friends that live in houses.. with garages.

i have the same problem. Me and my friends are moving int oan apartment this summer, and we are all in College, and i am bursting with ideas for the ol SX. But i am going about it this way:

Save and save and save while living in the apartment, and plan plan plan while in the apartment as well (I already have my plan worked out into 4 big phases ). Then when you end up renting /buying a house with a garage, you will have detailed plans ans info and money to help you get the project going the right way!!

Oh, and lots of CAR porn to subside the need while in the apartment

I feel your pain. As a car enthusiast living in a mid-rise apt. building, it sucks! To get anything done, I have to drive half an hour to get to a friend's house! Some day... when I can afford a place w/ a garage... some day (even a townhouse w/ a garage is $300K)

My advice:
1. make friends who are dead-beats and live w/ their parents (who can afford houses w/ garages)
2. try finding someone who will let you rent either their garage or a small building on their property (I think you have to live "out" a ways for this). I knew a guy who lived in the midwest who rented out a barn x number of miles outside the town he lived in for like $50/mo.

OK... here goes... anyone near Down Town LA (maybe Santa Monica or something.... even as far as Malibu) with an extra garage space (or empty garage) want to rent it out to a starving college kid?

I also live in an apartment, and get "told off" any time I work on my car. Plus you have to bring all your tools down from your room each time you work on it. It's a huge PITA.

I think i speak for me, jeff240sx and maybe a good 5 other people in my area when i say: my garage. Seems to be the "in" place to work on cars...Or as jeff would put it "I brought a 6 pack...pick up a wrench."

I'm still living with my grandparents, and will be for at least 2 more years to save money on dorms while i'm going to college. Anyway, we've got a 2-car garage here that i'm renovating to make the perfect place to work on a car.
