Removing S14 Sr head??
I have to remove the head off an S14 engine I have but I need to know the pattern for the head bolts. They do have to be taken off in a sertan order so you dont warp the head dont they??I dont want ot just start taking the bolts out and end up warping the head.

I don't think you should touch that shit if you have to come here to ask.
Leave it to a real mechanic. Start in the middle.. and detorque. EZ. It's pretty touch, hope you can handle it. |

Download the S15 FSM and read it, then decide if you're up to it. Here's the link for the manual http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/24/47/

when you pull the head it is a good Idea to check the head anyway. It would suck big time to reinstall it and blow the headgasket because it was a little out.
+1 on downloading the FSM. |

Its not an easy task to remove the head. Expect 2 days with all the tools in the world.
If its like the KA_E you will have to unbolt the support for the intake, and let the intake sit against the fender, then un-bolt everything else. MARK YOUR VACCUM HOSES BEFORE REMOVAL IMPORTANT stuff a piece of wood or something inbetween the timing chain so it doesnt drop down inside the block...otherwise you'll have to spend all that time figuring it out afterward. Same with the cams. Don't turn the cams unless you really really need to. Also look into replacing all gaskets, intake, exhaust, as well as the head. May as well while you are in there.

there's a thing to keep the chain from dropping btw. Not sure what you mean by turning the cams. the cam sproket and shafts gets removed when you remove the head. The nuts to the head studs are under the rockers basiclly.

Just get a breaker(sissy bar) I always do it by hand. Crack every one first, then go through and lossen them the rest of the way.
Oh yea and never never ever ever start on the inside(whoever said that needs shot) Always outside in always.......ALWAYS!!!! |

Breaker bar and a pipe on that. I use a section of pipe from my service jack. The idea is to turn the fastener smoothly. If you have a short breaker bar, the bolts will vibrate as they loosen - this will cause the bolt torque to violently fluctuate. It takes less energy to keep an object in motion, than to place it in motion. If you use an air gun on a head bolt, you shouldn't be allowed to use safety scissors, much less get anywhere near a car.
This isn't overkill, and you would be surprised at how easy it is to damage a head. |
