long shifter solutions

I'm trying to replace my stock s14 shifter with somthing along the lines of long shifter.
I'd like to retain the stock shift distance, and most likely go with either

a) a good long throw shifter such as something like this, but for 240's:
http://www.fastlineperformance.com/shifter.htm
If there is a comparable product for 240's pls let me know.
This is a bit more absurd, and im not so sure it would work:
http://www.mooneyesusa.com/catalog/p...3bd324450f18e5

or

b) get a nismo shifter that has close to stock shift distances, and a longer shift knob. I would rather not get one of the Bubble knobs, as they seem to have a more notorious rep of breaking in half.
there are a couple long shift knobs i'm considering, but the ones that are extraordinarily longer are limited.
here's another equally ridiculous suggestion for a shift knob. may or may not work better than the bubble knob;

http://www.mooneyesusa.com/catalog/p...3bd324450f18e5

I've tried to do some research here, but the info i could find was a bit more limited. There are a lot of resources on short shifter.
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.p...hlight=shifter
Someone in the last post mentioned something about using an earlier silvia S12 shifter. It sounds like an interesting idea. How many of us have actually done that?

Any feedback would be great, tia!

First of all - you get a POSITIVE for wanting something Mooneyes.
I was there the other day but didn't see that shift knob at the shop. Perhaps they have it though...
oh oops, they DO have the Nostalgia shift arm there.

Second - What I did, is go to autobacs and buy this thread on shifter extension. I'd say it is a good 3 inches longer. I love it.

I suggest this.

I think Autobacs is like...5,000 some odd miles away from me?

I'll see if I can stop by on the way home from work...

Yes, but for 10x1.25 they had the shorter ones in stock, I think its like 4" tall and has a kink in it so it bends

They had black and silver in stock yesterday when I was there

They had the longer 6" ones that are straight, but only in 12x1.25 pitch, which is Toyota/Subaru

I'd suggest the longer shifter than the shifter extension... ive broken 3 of those things.. twice on the track and one on the street during regular driving...got mine from autobacs.. two were from one company and the third one was a different company (well different name on the packaging anyway)

good luck
bubble knob ftw

in addition to what has already been mentioned, there's a less likely chance of mis-shifting. I absolutely suck at shifting, and that will never change. I mis-shift all the time on cars with shorter throw shifters. I just have to come up with something to get around that. On cars with longer throw shifters, like my crx beater, I almost never have that problem. I'd imagine its not for everyone though.

At the track, I've already had 2 unfortunate incidents b/c of mis-shifting.
I spun out and hit an apex curb hard the first time with a miata. The second time i blew my engine by shifting to 3rd instead of 5th on a straightway.

I also personally don't care for shifters that have a shorter throw. Its also a matter of preference. i just dont care for the feel of it. i also find long-shifters aesthetically pleasing to the eye. check out the cressida 'pimp cane' shifter on the earlier zilvia link i gave, or the pickup truck-like shifter at fastline performance. It looks kinda redneck, but i really like it a lot.

also, kinda ot but I'm also trying to figure another long shifter alternative with my 06 sti. its a fun car for the most part, but I don't think I could ever get used to the sloppy, shorter throw oem shifter.

I did think about the extensions, but yes i would worry about the durability of it on the on the track. It just takes one mishap to cause some kinda disaster there. However, if there is some brand of extension that is infact proven on the track, then I'd def been interested!

i got this

THanks for the rec! I think I'll give the extension a shot, since you said it's track proven. are there any particular tips you would have to secure the extension from slipping?

Tighten it.

It comes with a nut to secure the extension to the shifter.

it just threads on.

I have never had a problem with it breaking, loosening, stripping, yelling, etc.

I have a Pivot shift knob on it.
Real simple system. No worries.

here's another shiftknob at the mooneyes site i was looking at. its just as cheesy, but is 7.5" long (maybe too long for a 240 interior). also made of urethene, so Id imagine its more durable than the bubble knob:

Lol, the shifter extensions suprisingly are not easy to find. I tried to Google it, but no luck. the superautobacs site unfortunately doesn't have an online store where you could look up the part either.

if i was closer to garbage grove (im an hour away), i would check out autobacs sooner. I'll prob stop by within a month or so and pick something up.
