On carb cars you leave the key in the on position. Put it in first (sometimes easier in reverse) Push the car then pop the clutch. vroom.
I belive although I've never tried that it works the same on EFI cars as well. Best thing to do is to get someone to jump it. |

Bad starter I'm guessing?
1. Open door. 2. Put key in ignition 3. Turn to ON position 4. Find long straight road 5. Put car in neutral and release ebrake 6. Push while steering and get it rolling at least about 15 mph 7. Jump back in car (if you're doing this yourself) 8. Push clutch in 9. Grab 2nd gear 10. Pop clutch and give her gas! 11. Drive directly to nearest parts store and buy new starter while letting car idle in parking lot for all to point and laugh at the ghettoness of the no-start-action. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() ![]() Eric

by the way, it's going to jerk a bit when you get it going...just keep your foot in the gas and drive!

Don't you start it from 1st gear? The reason I ask is because I had to do it on my old camaro a couple of times, and we did it from first...anyone want to explain advantage of doing 2nd instead of 1st.

2d gear is easier on the car, the pusher, and the guy trying not to leave teeth marks in the wheel/driver (and it works just fine). I've got the best push start story: On a rainy Saturday last fall, I'm taking my car in to get an estimate on getting my then recently destroyed console/stolen stereo replaced. I park at a near-by 7/11 to get a coffee and newspaper for while I wait. I jump in the car to leave - NOTHING! After hunting for both a shop (on foot) and all over the car for nothing, I give up and take mass transit home. I narrow my problem and decide it COULD be the new alarm I just had installed last week (b/c theives trashed the old one). The kid working there says, yeah - that sounds like a starter cut issue - bring it in... about 20 miles away! Tow = $$$ PUSH START So I call a couple of my friends (fellow college grad, white collar workers... who do stupid sh!t like work on cars) and ask them to help me get it push started. So we go to the car and push it up (failure) and down (success) a side street getting it started. All the while, about 50 Latino guys from the Salvadoran grill place next door to the 7/11 are standing in the parking lot watching and busting a gut at the loco gringos push starting a car! They all clapped, yelled, and whistled once it started. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> Mark -gringo extrordinaire |

Yeah.. just remember reverse will pick up speed a lot faster when you let out the clutch.. Once the cars started.. you can hit the clutch again, and stop the car if necessary.. I used to have to do this like once every 3 days in my old nissan truck.. ugg. I've never owned a nissan that I didn't have to replace the starter in.

The moron car dealer had to do this when I bought my last 240. Thaink thats part of the reason I got such a good eal on it. Apparently the guy detailing it left the dome light on and killed the battery. And they had a battery powered jumpstarter thing, but nobody had plugged it in and there were no jumper cables around.
Did the job, not the best way to try to sell a car, but I guess it worked for me. |
