R33 lsd...use 240sx axles?
I have what appears to be be an r33 lsd (6 bolt) in great condition just waiting to go into my 240sx, but here's the problem...the axles that came with it are damaged (threads are all messed up). So here's what I was wondering, can I use the 240sx axles and take the part that bolts up (the 3x2 flange) to the differential off, and then use the same piece off of the r33 axle (6 bolt flange) to make a "new" axle that will work with the r33 lsd?
I tried searching but didn't see anyone trying this.

Your axles are already 6bolt. If the diff is as well, and is not a 4channel ABS fitted unit, you don't have to change anything. If it is, then you'll need VLSD nonABS output shafts.

The axles on the vlsd (whats on the car right now) are the 2x3 bolt style. The R33 differential has the 6 bolt style. So it won't bolt up using the 240sx axles.
What I'm really getting at here is does anyone know if the number of spines on the axle itself are the same with both the 240sx axles and the r33 axles.

Yes, they both have 6 bolts, but the pattern is different. It is basically 1x6 for the Skyline, IIRC.
Just pull the 3x2 axles off the stock VLSD and stick em in the R33 diff. Easy. It should work as long as the current VLSD is an S14 ABS version (might even work with the non-abs S14 shafts). |

I've never heard of a 1x6 bolt pattern on an axle, news to me. The open diff output shafts won't fit into the VLSD case, so you're still stuck with finding matching axles, though from what you're saying they're apparently rare as hell.

IIRC, the 1x6 is the BIG pattern, like on Q45 VLSD's...
And if that's the ones you have, then the only bolt-in axle solution is one Q45 axles, one 300ZX axle...and you MUST replace both rear hubs with 300ZX TT rear hubs for the big splines. $$$ ........ Post a pic of this diff. - Brian

I'm heading over to the garage to give my idea a shot. Pictures will be coming soon...
I have the hubs and stuff from the R33 as well... ![]()

How can I tell if its an R230 unit?
This thing came with the car when I bought it...guy said it came from an R33 (who knows if thats the case though). On the back of the LSD was two sensors with wires coming out of them, one sensor on each side of the lsd that mated up to what looked like a gear type thing. Did a little research and it seems to be an "active lsd" that if it saw slippage it would send power up front. Theres also a orange sticker that says "lsd oil only" on it and the bottom of the lsd casing has a heat sink/fins

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have the other hub from the r33 rear end as well... Thoughts, suggestions, rude comments? The LSD itself looks like it'll bolt up to the subframe with out any issues. It's hard to tell, but in the last picture you can see how badly the threads are messed up on part of the axle that was in the hub. I haven't tried my mix and match axle idea yet because I couldn't get the big nut off the 240sx axle (subframe is loose for the moment while I install new bushings). Looks like worst case is I'll be buying some 300zx-tt axles.

I think it might be...someone wrote "GTR" on one of the brake rotors that came with everything.
Seems like a true lsd instead of a vlsd...when I turn one end of the lsd both ends turn together in the same direction.

The "GTR" marking was written in some kind of ink on the rotor, by no means a Nissan marking.
Well...I test fitted it last night in the subframe and it fits in perfectly, all the mounting points line up.
