car starts but dies. HELP!!!

i have a 1990 hatch and i put in a 90 sohc engine in it. it starts up if i put some carb cleaner in it but then it dies in about two seconds. a friend told me that it could be anything even the ecu. i changed the ecu from a 10 to a 14 but it still reacts the same way. any help on what i should try.

I know what it is. I had same problem up until yesterday. Make your own fuel gauge or buy one and put it on after fuel filter and you should be getting about 35+ psi when it primes and 40+ revving it. Then put it on before fuel filter and see what it says. If still low like 19 which is what mine was getting its more than likely your pump. I put a new pump in and filter and made sure timing was right and boom the car runs better than ever. Oh and make sure your getting spark as well.

It could be a distributor or ignition module too. I had that happen to me.

may not be your ignition since it starts when you add gas in it...

check your fuel pump fuse... if its blown then the baffels in your gas tank is causing your fuel pump to short..... take those baffels off....

Try spraying carb cleaner in it as soon as you start it (will take two people) and if it runs while spraying and dies when you stop its a fuel issue.

they are steel walls about 3" in height and its looped all around the tank... if you noticed some loose... then those are the ones you pull out... they are only held by zipties....

if your car starts only when you spray... then your ignition should be ok... did you check/replace the fuel lines running through your engine bay? did you check the fuel pressure? you can get a fuel pressure guage at kragen or autozone or something...
