*** Pre-Law Student ***
Bail is not a payment of a citation. It is a depost to ensure the apperance of the arrested person for his/her trial. It is 10% of the bond, set by the court determined by flight risk and severity of the crime accused, if you choose to use a bail bondsman. With a bail bondsman, you do not get your money back. You could also pay the court directly the full ammount, which is fully refundable, in either cash or property.
So... bail is not what you are paying.
*** End Pre-Law Student ***
Also, fines from traffic citations vary from county to county, and state to state. But if you read the ticket, and usually the accompanying paperwork given with the ticket, it will have the fine. It has to, how else would you know where to mail the check to and for how much. Just read the ticket.

Well, here is the options that I have for you 1) Be honest and pay the full amount up front, 2) Take the ticket to court, if the officer does not show, then the charge is automatically dropped, if he does show, usually the judge will lower the amount of the fine. 3) Go to traffic school, the ticket will not appear on your record and then your insurance rates do not go up.

I personally took my ticket to court. They mailed me a fine in the mail. I then ignored the first notice. Then the second notice came and I went to court at almost the very last date I could show up to schedule my court date. Then I opted not to have a speedy trial. So I ended up having my court date way later in the year. Then after the officer showed up, (he had me dead to rights, I was just hoping he would not show up), I got my fine reduced and went to traffic school. All-in-all my ticket date to Traffic school date was ALMOST a YEAR. Which meant that I only had to wait like 6 months after that before I could take traffic school again (Traffic school is 18 months between tickets, not when you go to traffic school). This occured when I drove my white 4 door 1990 Toyota Camry 4 banger.

Also my friend has NO tickets on his record and has been ticketed mulitple times. His method of getting out of the ticket is to mail in his fine. When he mails in the amount, he mails in $1 dollar more than the fine amount. The state then proceeds to cut him a check for the $1. He gets the check and never cashes it. By not cashing the check, the case is still considered open so the ticket does not go on his record. After 3 years, the case is closed anyways and the ticket can not appear on his record. It has worked for him multiple times, it can not hurt to try it. Worse thing that happens is the state takes your $1, big deal. Remember that to do this you MUST MAIL IN YOUR FINE.

If you have the option of going to an arraignment, do that. The judge will most likely offer you a smaller fine to try to get you not to go to trial. If you can't afford much of anything right now, get an extension for your ticket's deadline first. They can probably push it back a couple months. Then go to the arraignment, and the judge will give you another deadline to make your payment, which could be another couple months.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I got a ticket near the beginning of this year for switching lanes without signaling, and at the same time got a fix-it ticket for not having a front license plate on. The initial fine was close to $200, plus $10 for the fix-it. Well the judge cleared the fix-it and reduced the fine to $60, and my deadline for making the payment is next month.

All I can say is definately take it to court. I got my fine reduced from 120 to 60 dollars.

Well, I would go by the same path I went last time, try to fight the ticket first. I can take traffic school again now, so no biggie, but I would FULLY try my buddy's way of going about it (overpay by $1 by mail-in check). I know for a fact it has worked for him, so it is definitely worth trying in my opinion.

i know here, in South Carolina, a fine like that is 2 points and 100 dollars. If it was 64 in a 55 then it would get 2 points and 50 dollars. Cops suck, i hate all their bullshit.

Sarasota County, FL an 11mph over ticket is $124 and 3 points. But like I said earlier... it changes overs states and counties.

I just got pulled over a couple nights ago. I was going 55 on a 35. I dont think anyone ACTUALLY goes 35 on that road anyway. I'm in the bay area cali so I'm pretty sure this ticket will hurt pretty bad...

My buddy lives up in Angel's Camp, California now, where is house is. He also lives at his parents house in Castro Valley, CA (next to Oakland/San Leandro/Hayward/Pleasanton areas). He has had tickets from around the area, up around Walnut Creek/Concord areas and up around Modesto areas, and none are on his records.

well Tim, I just told a friend of mine your method, and he said it won't work, he already tried it. he said that they'll send you a notice that the check will be voided in 30 days and the point will still go on your record. I guess they caught on... oh well, he told me traffic school ain't bad, it depends on the instructor you get, he told me about one that only keeps you for 6 hours and you also get pizza, hehe, I hope he still does that.

My friend has had 3 tickets within the past 6 months (all iin different counties). He's gone to traffic school for them all and his insurance hasn't gone up and no points have gone off of his license. That is what I would do.

man, last night my friend and i were out doing some stuff to our rival high school building and as we were pulling out we had our headlights off. Right when we pulled out of the school a cop passed us and my friend turned his headlights on real fast. As we pulled out we saw the cop heat his brakes. My friend floored it. He has a BMW and was hauling ass (about 100 or so). The cop turned around and chased us. He chased us about 3 miles or so and finally caught up to us cause there weren't any side roads to turn off of to lose him on. So when he pulled us over he asked us why we he had to go 130 mph to catch up to us. Luckily my friend had a headlight out and made up a story saying we stoped at the high school to check the headlight and thats why we didn't have our headlights off. We sat there for about an half an hour waiting on them. We think they called another cop out to look at the high school to see if anything was wrong. Fortunately they didn't find what we had done. But, unfortunately my friend got a Reckless Driving ticket for trying to run from him. Which, that fine here is about $400 and 6 points. But the cop said he will work with my friend if he shows up for court.

Dude, that sucks about your check. Well, I can't guarantee that it will work for everybody/everywhere. But, I know it worked for my buddy. I guess it is one of the downfalls of trying it. Did the point go on your record? Did your insurance go up?
