Slow spooling turbo
I have asked this before but I think I figured out a better way to explain it now.
Setup is SOHC 8.8:1 compression, GT30 turbo .63, ebay fmic, 50lb injectors, JWT ecu, and other turbo stuff. Anyway it worked good for the first few weeks I had the turbo on the engine. Spooled very quickly, was hitting 14psi around 3k and held it till redline. One morning the car felt sluggish. Now it takes all of 2nd gear just to get to 9psi. Boost controller won't raise boost, disconnecting wastegate vacuum won't raise boost, compression is good, timing is stock, fuel pressure is at stock. CLIFFS: Used to hit full boost at 3k rpms, now takes all of 2nd gear to hit ~9psi.

I'd also check all gaskets before the turbo, and make sure that none of the bolts holding your turbo to your manifold have backed out. This obviously would affect how much exhaust gas makes it through to spool your turbo.

noob question about timing gun
Hey guys
I am thinking to check my timing with timing gun. I have redtop SR. I have searched a lot of threads. and everybody says connect a spark plug wire to my spark plug and the other side connect to the coilpack. and connect the timing gun to the spark plug wire. now my question is, how do you connect the spark plug wire to the coilpack? They are both female ends, right? so how do I connect it right? |

sounds like your wastegate flapper might be stuck open. i had the opposite problem. boosting infinite all the time. my wastegate flapper happened to be stuck shut.
your wastegate actuator could be screwed up too. it sounds like you were getting rev happy when you first started using this setup. make sure you didn't blow a gasket between the turbo and mani, and the dp/turbo as well. but yeah i agree with setting the timing. does the car stutter when you get on the throttle? |

I know how to set the base timing but is there a difference by checking it via the CAS?
Quote:
I have replaced the exhaust mani to head gasket, the turbo to mani gasket and the turbo outlet to downpipe gasket and the ones in the exhaust. So I am almost positive there is no leaks from the head to the tip of the exhaust. Of course my only testing has been to feel for leaks, I've tried soapy water but you can only use that for the first few seconds of startup.

if he has shaftplay, then he will hear the unmistakable 'howling' sound of a blown turbo.
as i said its definitely boost leak.... wastegate opening too soon would be classified as a MAJOR boost leak (if thats the case) ![]() |
