What is better for the money? A s14 motor with 40k mils front clip for 4G's, or go for the cheaper s13 motor? I have the intercooler already. Someone please advise if the s14 is really worth it.
Thanks |

depending on which s14 engine you get (There were supposed to be three, early, middle, and late), it may or may not have VVT (think VTEC for nissans). I understand that this is just one more thing that can break when you turn up the boost, but i dont really know first hand. also, with any s14, you have the lighter turbo wheel, which is supposed to handle more power and spool faster.
i'd assume he means SR, sinces hes talkin intercoolers and front clips and what not |

Yea the sr, sorry about the misunderstanding. Which model had vvt? Are you saying the engine w/o vvt is better? I intend to up the boost, i dunno how muhc, but i do intend to do some mods to the car. Do you think that the vvt is worth it? or should i go with the s13 sr?
Thanks for the quick replies! |

Go with the S14. If anything it will be more reliable. Its designed from the factory to support more horsepower than the S13 engine, so it should be a little stronger. I'm not sure but I though The variable vale timing wasn't introduced until the S15 engine. Either way it won't matter under moderate street tuning. Plus you get a ball bearing turbo which wil spool up quicker than the s13 turbo. Just some thoughts. Its worth it if you have the money.

hmm...
I think it depends on what your goals are. If you plan to add some basic BPU's (EBC, FMIC, BOV, maybe cams, etc.), you may be better off going s14. The motor is newer and less likely to have hard to fix problems and the turbo is big enough to support 300 whp (that's a lot!). The head isn't as good and VVT is helpful on low boost, but will need to be disconnected for increased levels. On the other hand, if you plan to build a monster, s13 is the only way to go. The head is cleaner, no VVT to get in the way, and it is cheaper so all that money you would use to rebuild it, as it is old, is actually going to build it. Down side is that these motors are up to 10 years old (no less than 7!). They may have some leaking seals and heavy wear - who knows? They also come with a smaller turbo that is difficult to support much of 250 whp with. So I guess my answer is what are you looking for and how much do you like to get greasy? |
