Sludgy, Lumpy, Thick Oil!!!!

I bought a engine today for a customer of mine, and when I drained the oil, I removed about 8 quarts of thick, lumpy, sludgy oil.
I've seen oil and coolant mixed together, and this was not it. The oil was very dark - normal color. I removed the valve cover, and aside from more ****ty oil, everything was good. I removed the oil pan, and saw the same thing. There weren't any visible metal filings, and each rod bearing had equal play (minimal).
Any ideas?

I'm not an engine internals expert, but it sounds to me like the previous owner probably just drove it 90 billion miles without an oil change.

I think so, too.
The cams are clean as hell, with no visible wear, and the engine is so clean, that I don't think it really has too many miles on it.
I dunno.

Exactly. If everything is in spec then the engine is fine other than needing a good cleaning.

That's what you get when you use crappy oil like Penzoil! I'm not sure if they have changed their formulation, but I knew someone who overhauled their engine once a year and when they used Penzoil, she said that it was like molten candle wax on her oil pan. This was about 4-5 years ago, so maybe Penzoil doesn't do that anymore...

Hell yeah Penzoil sucks. If you change it frequently(like a little under 3,000miles under city driving) then it would be fine...but get to driving a little hard for awhile have you're gonna have that candle wax lookin sh*t. That's why I don't use it. Oh, and even the teachers of my auto classes say that Penzoil sucks. They use stuff like Mobil One.

My guess would be the former owner of that engine went ahead and threw in the “OIL CHANGE IN A CAN” stuff that is suppose to clean your current oil by adding more… which is why there extra oil in the engine system…. maybe .. right ..

As far as I know, Penzoil and Quaker state among others are still perrifin (wax) based oils, hence when they break down they leave waxy residue all over everything. Nasty nasty. Castrol all the way man :P
