Lug nuts that keep turning...
Search turned up a bunch of useless results for me, and I honestly have no idea what I'd type in to get the "right answer".
Anyway. For some reason, I cannot tighten a couple of my lug nuts to 85 ft-lbs of tq on the front left wheel. Right front wheel were all good to go, but left front for some reason is giving me shit. Wheels: VS-KF Lug Nuts: Muteki open end spline drive lug nuts (red ones) I'm wondering if the lug nuts are getting owned and basically shearing off when I'm tightening them or something, as the coating on them have all but come off... PS - I've never had a problem with the black Muteki lug nuts, these red ones so far suck... the coating on them are flaking off where the conical seat part is. PPS - I don't think it's the wheel studs, as they aren't spinning, and I pulled them through the hub pretty much all the way before I even put the lugs on the wheels for the first time. Logan... help? |

did you check tightening the lugs without the wheels on?
let me get this straight... the lugs WON'T stop spinning? cause it could be that the thread is busting up and not "stoping" them from spining... kinda like when you keep tighetning a bolt too much... is that what you mean? |

So.... what's the problem here? I see where you complained about the nuts, etc... but what is the issue here? Are the threads in the nuts pulling out? Is the stud turning? Is the stud breaking?

u sure the stud isnt spinning with the lugnut? i recently had a problem like this and i had to take off the whole hub to reach the back of the studs. a bit of weld on each one worked great for holding it still while i used an impact

have you swapped around lug nuts to check whether its the lug nuts or stud? I agree with Bejota though, it kinda sounds like you have a messed up thread on the stud

I just looked at the studs, the studs look ok. Doesn't look like any of the threads are busted.
The nuts seemed ok too, didn't look like the threads are pulled out. Haven't swapped around nuts yet. And I found a mark on the stud, kept in mind where it was, tried to tighten the lug nut some more, and when I pulled everything back and looked at the stud again, it didn't move (it was less than 360 degrees so if it moved the mark would have moved with the lug nut). |

well if you can put them on and they spin and then take them off its clearly not the studs. cause if the studs broke free you wouldn't be able to thread the lugs off the stud

Try it without the wheel on so you can really see what's happening.

Welcome to my world sir ![]() I stick by a rule of 3. At all times 3 things have to be bad on the car. If I fix one of those things I set myself up for another part breaking of which I have no control. I know it sounds crazy maybe superstitious, but it's true for me... I love my S14 anyways though, plus I have my my spare Volvo240 |

Alright, next time the car is back up on jackstands I'll take a look at the lug nuts/studs situation with the wheel off and report my findings in this thread.
Thanks guys for the input. |

Same happened with me. I couldn't torque my lugnuts down, but I could remove the lugnut still. The splines on the stud might be almost completely stripped. You might want to check the splines on the hub itself too, as they might be stripping as well.

So I got the car up in the air, and pulled the wheel off and checked all the studs.
They're all tight, not spinning, and none of the threads are stripped or coming off. None of the lug nuts on that side is fucked up either. So then I put the wheel back on, and I think the reason for the lug nut issue is that, the lug nuts weren't 100% centered in the holes on the wheel, which I just made sure that all 5 of them were this time. Haven't tightened it with a torque wrench yet, but so far it seems promising. Then I moved on to the passenger side front wheel, and I've always wondered why the rotor keeps catching on the pads instead of being able to keep spinning round and round. Well, there was a wobble... Obviously it couldn't be Work wheel actually releasing a wobbly wheel to the general public, and since the wheel hasn't seen any real driving on it yet, it can't be bent. So I started taking the brakes on that side off and looking deeper into the problem. Long story short. It was the wheel studs. The knurl area on those studs STUCK OUT past the the hub's face. And yes, I got different studs from the same place that I got them from for some reason, but that's not important for my post because I've already contacted them about it. Anyway, so now it looks like the car's going to sit on jack stands for at least another week... Sigh... Telling you guys, 1 thing after another... |

Alright, I promised pics, here they are.
A view from the top reveals the problem ![]() Close up from the side ![]() Oh look at all these studs w/ their knurl area all sticking out ![]() Here are the difference between all 3 studs that I got. The ones that came on the hub is on the right. The first batch of studs I got on the left, and the 2nd batch of studs I got in the middle ![]() Look closely at the knurl area on these studs ![]() So yeah, still waiting on vendor to email me back... |
