warped or not
my buddy has an det with a power enterprise metal headgasket. he removed the head to put on a built head but the sale fell threw. now when he puts back on the metal hg he uses copper spray bu.t torques the head down in wrong order.did he damage the head or can he just loosen everything and re torque the head..
also he never had an over heating problem or any thing, the head was just taken off because he thought he was getting a built head. i told him to loosen it and re torque i wasnt sure if the head could get warped like that.. thanks |

I might have some bad news. I was one of the idiots that torqued on the head bolts backwords. I just loosened them up and torqued them down. I drove on them for about 250 miles then went to go get it dynoed. I ran it hard on a dyno with no problems but when I ran against a vette later that night I suddenly lost compression in all 4 cylinders. It looked like I was getting bad detonation but I was not able to open it and look into it because I got deployed to Iraq. It was weird because there was no leaks anywhere so i dont really have a clue what it was.
If there is a way to check for head warpage I would do it.

Yea you can check with a straight edge or one of them fancy rulers (dont know the proper name) place the head on a flat surface you should be able to tell if its uneven or warped. Or if your not 100% sure take it to a shop have them check. And another thing there is a torque sequence. When torquing the head you start from the inside out and also when removing the head it has its sequence from out to in. So if you just loosen the bolts with out using the sequence you my friend F'd up. It's all in the FSM
