ok i had to take my motor apart to change the head gasket everything runs fine, but theres major smoke coming out of my exhaust.... i carefully checked the block no busted sections...

will running lean cause my car to blow smoke out like crazy???

and i have a mad problem with stalling...but i think that has to do with the apexi twin chamber BOV.. its atmospheric...(i think).
but is there a way to keep my idle semi stable to the point where the car wont stall without the use of an S-AFC???

--- ok new case, you've taken off your headgasket, uhm, are you sure you setup the base timing correctly?

meaning you gotta get the cam sprockets and the chain aligned with the crank position. you know, w/ the pistons in TDC, you have to setup the cams in the right spot and there are marks on the chains that need to be in the right position.

your bov should be ok at idle.

What color is it? if it's oil, you could have bad rings or cylinder or piston scoring or a combination. That can only be tested by doing a leak down test.

Is it water? Instead of being bluish smoke like with engine oil, it'd be white instead and smell sweet. and since you just swapped out your HG, it might mean your head is warped.

---------I didn't check that far back, so why did you end up replacing your head gasket? Did you overheat your engine? if you did, it's very possible that your head is warped and needs to be shaved a bit.

---but tell me, how did you put the timing chain back on? The FSM's manual is off from how you're supposed to put the chain back on. gimme your email address and i can email you a picture of the correct way to put the chain back on the cams.

oh by the way, what sort of fuel management are you using, do you have fuel upgrades, are you using a hacked mafs, or are you running a standalone or using a fuel computer, do you have upgraded injectors, fpr, rrfpr, or fuel pump or anything?

ok my fuel setup is:

vortec FMU
walbro 225/hp
i plan on gettin an SAFC and 370's in a month or 2...

i know sounds cheap but im only running 4.35 psi...

my timing is correct, i made sure of that with a buddy of mine.. all the timing marks are aligned...
i replaced the gasket cuz there was a small leak in the old one...
i had the head resurfaced... so i would know what the problem is.. the only other oproblem i could think of is the turbo is bad and is leaking oil into the turbines...

if your compression checks out and you've got blue smoke, i'd think that it's possibly a leaking turbo or worn rings.

also. WHAT COLOR IS THE SMOKE?

black, blue, or white?

What does it smell like? Gas, Dirty, or Sweet?

---Try an Oil Change. If you just installed the turbo, it might need some time for the seals.

Before my KAT blew, it was idleing and stalling badly. i too had a bad starter alternator and battery.

is your turbo in good condition?

how large is your oil drain line??

kalieaire: i was leaning for more of the leaky turbo part, because earlier when checked under the hood.. and took off the hot pipe, there were small spots of oil around the clamp... but the smoke is white with a tint of blue...cant really tell the smell of the smoke cuz im sick lol...


Ace: yes i torqued down the head coprrectly order the bolts were supposed to be tightened with a torque wrench..
the turbo was supposed to be rebuilt by the manufacturer...
but i might see if i could replace the seals on the turbo... you know how much that might cost?
my oil drain line is about 1/2 inch.. pretty good sized...

i really appreciate you guys helping me out really quick....
but if i cant figure out the problem... im probably gonna start rebuilding.....but if i could fix it now it would be great...

check the intercooler and look for oil, and check your down pipe too.

how long have you been kat and how long have you had the turbo, was it used before you installed it?

nope turbo was brand new....ive been KA-t for about 1 month now...

I personally wouldnt use an atmospheric BOV unless you have a S-AFC. I've read a few threads where some other people had stalling problems by not choosing to recirculate with thier BOV.

Well... you're supposed to torque the head down, then back off all the head bolts, then torque it back down to its final torque spec. Doing so will seat the gasket, otherwise the gasket will expand and contract under a heat cycle, leaving you with a leaking headgasket.

If you think it's the turbo, pull the spark plugs. If they aren't oil fouled, it's gotta be the turbo.

yah i pulled my spark plugs and they arent soaked in anything...
i noticed that when i pulled out the hotpipe side IC piping there was oil around the silcone tube connector... then i went under my car to check for an oil leak (that i couldnt find before). I noticed oil around the coldpipe silicone boot that connects to the IC...

pulled out from throttle boddy and no oil there...

now im pretty sure its a bad turbo...

but whats wierd is that it hold boost steadily...(according to my boost guage)

now im gonna get my IC piping redone (in a cleaner fashion)
flush out my IC with alcahol (or is there something else i could use?)
replace my turbo with a better Garret T3 .60/.63 stage III wheel.. for 300 bux brand spanking new from a reputable show i live near...

my 370's and S-afc should be coming in the mail soon...
and im going to get an engine rebuild with energy dynamix rods and energy dynamix low comp. pistons for super cheap too... so thats gonna be done all within the next 2 months...

ill keep you all updated with it as it goes along....

any other test to see if it is the turbo?? like by taking it apart?? is it a pretty simple process to change the seals in the turbo??(might save me 300 bux...

Check for shaft play.

Rebuilding a turbo yourself is a bad idea. I screwed one up. Ended up costing me an engine.
