I'm a big fan of Alpine, i've got a 12 inch type S with a dual voice coil and it sounds great. I'm pushing over 100db's in the car, and 90 outside with the windows down. I could probably get it to go a bit louder, but i'd rather have it for a while

Hmmmm. You can't really just ask what sub is best. It depends on what you are looking for. Do you want new or used? What amp are you using to power the subs? I bought two used Rockford 10 XLC's in box for $100. Hooked up to my Kenwood 600 they can hit harder and crisper than I need. It would tear my car up in a month, but it is nice to have the capability just in case.

if you have the time, get some infinite baffle "freeair" subs and stick in the rear quarter firewall. go to www.240sx.org and go on to "installs". I'm suggesting using freeair subs, b/c there are a lot of holes along the firewall panel which will kill performance of regular subs.

Hey Alen,
If you're not a bass monkey you can wedge 3 8" woofers up on the shelf. I have 3 in my 98. They sound awesome!! I'm running 3 8W3-D2 speakers at 3 ohm mono off a JL 500/1 and it has some great tonal accuracy and still "gets it on" good enough for me. But I do not really care for excessive bass. If you want I give you my box specs... Jeff |

The shelf is that additional space right behind the backseat under the speakers right? It'd be great if you can gimme the specs, thank alot =) |

At circuit city they sell 3 mtx 10's in a box (cant remember model number...even though my friend has them) The box fits really well and still leaves about 1/2 of the trunk space...it hits pretty hard too

$399 for the 3 MTX 6000 series 10" subs in a sealed box. The box is _ lookin.. and has a clear plexiglass
/ \ viewport. They are 12 ohm subs, but wired in trio to 4 ohms each, and I am pushing 400 watts mono to mine.. and they hit hard, and tight... -Jeff |

Dude no offense but I could fart louder than 100db if I half tried. A stock stereo will hit 100db. A really inexpensive system should hit 115 maybe a 120. This 1 12, 2 10's 300 watts. As far as JL goes. The W0 is thier bargain sub. Just a low buck boom. The W3 is used for spl. The subs specs show it's better suited for ported boxes and thier power handling is much higher than what they're rated at. The W6 is a sound quality sub. They are used in sealed boxes and produce tight clean bass. Not to say they won't get loud but experience and number tell the facts. Go to www.nexxon.com and check out the specials. They usually have some really good deals on some really good equipment. Where are you from and how much are you looking to spend? Do you already have an amp or are you buying a whole system? |

Hmm interesting. Maybe I calibrated the DB meter wrong or somethin. Ok, put it this way. I had the system up while my car was out on the road and my grandmother felt the bass up on the second floor of the house. That good enough for you?

Yea you did because he is right... those are week numbers. Don't worry I've heard a TypeS 12 before.... you'd have to be SERIOUSLY messed up to be hitting just a weak 100dB. You're probably pushing 125dB at minimum. Especially in a hatch back you can get some excellent SPL outta some pretty wank systems. So it's probably higher than that!

Yeah, thats kinda what I figured. Those radio shack meters only go up to 139 db's and they aren't really accurate at all. They are good for testing though. Just keep the volume down or place something over the mic to quite it down and you can test box placement, port tuning, etc.
W7's inexpensive? What do you do for a living that the W7's are inexpensive cause I want in. Oh and just as a reference, my old stereo could be heard from 3 miles away. This is road driving though, in a straigh line it was 2 miles maybe a touch more. At any rate it was a LONG ways away. When I turned it on outside the bowling alley they could hear my bass hit over the music they were blasting inside for neon rock bowling or some crap which is pretty loud. And in the words of a cop that pulled me over when I told him it wasn't that loud. "I could feel you coming 5 minutes before I ever saw you, could you please turn it down." And the lady next to the stereo shop when I demo'd it for them. "HEY! Would you mind turning that down you're knocking stuff off the walls and one of the lights just went out." |
