Rear Drift Tire Recommendations - NO Blowouts

I need to order rear tires for a few upcoming drift events and monies is low...

to the regular mid level-pro drifters,


out of these cheap china brands, which one do you guys have most experience with?

no pic
ling long,
diamondback,
and/or
sunny

out of these three, which ones:
-last longest; no blowout when drifting
-no shredding when drifting
-dont chunk when drifting


type of drift event/pavement: parking lot

the ling long/diamond backs are the same thing as "Triangles" here in Japan. They last quite well. IIRC the kinda chunk, but nothing like 18" 595's! The grip is nothing to brag about, but they get the job done and are perfect for budget drifting.

EDIT: You should look at Achilles ATR Sport. That is a REAL popular, cheap tire here in Japan that I saw offered @ onilnetires.com or something like that. Some guys here even use them as fronts. They have good grip, smoke, and tire wear. Better than the other two you just posted up. Oh, if your running 17's, you might as well just buy 595's...better tire for only $10 more a pop (than the diamondbacks)

Im not a pro-am guy or anything and cannot comment on the grip vs other tires...But i have ATR sports in 17" sizes on my s13 daily, and i get after it in the parking lots pretty well haha. The wear seems to be pretty good on them, and they dont chunk up.

Overall i feel comfortable recommending them. Especially since you can find them for $58 dollars a tire!!!!

My set of 4 cost me 260 shipped i think?? Straight up steal haha

Messing around in the parking lot is NOT enough to say they last long, or don't chunk up.

I had a set of wheels that had Sunny loaded up on them...225/40-18s and shit lasted for a while. Grip was okay on the rear, felt similar to regular feddy 595s.

Alot of us out here use Achilles ATR Sports...shit is awesome for the amount of grip it has and doesnt chunk at all, and for the price of it, its fucking unbeatable. I usually run 235/45-17s and I've had a pair last 2 full events on me. Just had to make sure I flipped them after each event due to camber wear.

Always enjoy hearing others recommendations for tires. I personally love having new tires to drive on since I'm looking for consistency.

A local friend of mine started a thread on the STL forums about this; needless to say, we were the only contributors xD.

A list as to what I've ran:

BFGoodrich G-Force Sport

BFGoodrich G-Fore KDW 2

Federal SS595

Nexen N3000

Linglong L688


That's about all I've bout somewhat used/new for the rears. My favorites are the KDW 2's with the BFG's Sports at a close 2nd. Smoke/Grip are outstanding, but the treadwear is somewhat sacrificed.

The Linglongs/Nexen's have lasted the longest for me at events offering moderate smoke, blah blah. I've never really experienced 'chunking' and have done high 3rd gear speeds on these tires.

The Federal 595's I always experience a hit or miss batch. I've never had issues with 'chunking' on mostly 2nd gear events. However, at an all 3rd gear track, they were terrible!

Nonetheless. If I had unlimited budget or a larger budget the KDW 2 would be my tire of choice. However, for now working 70 hours/week while in college I'll stick to the Federal 595's or the Nexen's.

Edit: I'll have to try those Achilles tires out. I believe NTB sells them locally.

I guess I can see the length issue, didn't consider that haha. I mean in actual perofmrance 'related' differences though, I can't see those cheapies being any good...I know the Federals chunked pretty hardcore even during the 2 HPDE sessions I used them on...

I know of a place about two hours from me that sells all sorts of tires ranging from 16"-20". Sometimes you get tires with 90% tread for less than $50 a pair. Other times you get tires with 60-70% tread for $30.

That's where I got my full set of Falken Ziex for my brother's daily. 90% tread. $90 for a full set. Also bought a full set of BF Goodrich G-Force Sport's for the same price. 90% tread too.

Now, is it worth the 4+ hour drive? Hellz yah. Bring like 5 sets of tires with me at once for my friends/family.

Federal 595's are some of the crappiest tires I've been around in the past decade on track. I can only imagine how bad some of the Ding-a-Ling-Long or whatever tires some guys are talking about being WORSE than those are...

Like I said, they latest 2 morning sessions for me, and I was out. Luckily was credited the second half for another day, bt the point remained that they were shit on track. On street, fine...they handled the power well...but as double duty forget about it.

i second both of those statements, used tires too unpredictable and especially suck if your power limitations dont let you break all brands of tires loose.

the n3000s always seemed a little grippier to me, not much smoke for those who care, wear awesome for those who are on a budget and ironically like to preserve their drift tires. <-my suggestion

first tires i ever bought new to drift on were 912s. liked the smoke, wore pretty damn good, and not too sticky either.

also came across the michelins pilots i believe, on almost every damn car. came across those alot, wore fine, pretty loose like ice skating as i recall.

tires i would stay away from... continentals, for some reason (since i really had no choice but to get used tires) seemed to come across them alot. spend to many nights cutting strands of tire wrapped around my suspension. also have black marks to the front of my door from where they would shred and slap the side of the car... yea.

Used tire joints are so common in the Northeast, that we have 4 in our little town. We're 100 miles from Philly and NYC, so maybe thats why...commuters don't give 2 shits if they have 3 dollar brake pads or 5 dolklar tires, so long as inspection is good.

I liked the ATR Sports. Smokey, lasted a while, and wore evenly. Not a bad tire for the cheap price

Personally, I've found Federals to be nice and consistent, 2nd gear and 3rd gear at street 30-35psi pressure. Occasional chunking if they're fresh and not heat cycled.

Buddy of mine has LingLongs, they're pretty hard compound so they totally last forever, but he has to use really low pressure to get any decent traction.

I hear Falken ST115s are pretty nice if you can find them.

If you keep the federals at 28psi hot they will never chunk. I went through 20+ brand new feddy's last season and only had one chunk because the pressure was over 40psi hot. So it was my fault that they chunked.

BTW. there are no "good" cheap tires. when you find a magical tire with tons of grip, that last long, and is cheap. let me know.

Again 2 sessions at HPDE, and they were shot for me. Drifting may be different due to less time/hot cold cycles (although constnat spinning is hard to relate to).

I usually ran 28/30 cold, any lower and they rolled over like none other. It certainly made me rethink ever running my street tire again on track/resist urge to track car when don't need too haha.

Yeah I would definitely run something better for HPDE.

I personally only run them on the rear because they are the best bang for the buck for drifting.

Yea I certainly can't complain for their street manners. Were decent in rain too.

yes, i use federal ss595 since they 1st got popular...
st-115's grip good and smoke awesome but can still be pricey

nexen n3000, n5000, they all last long, but dont smoke much

anything continental sucks, chunk, and the shredds get stuck all up in ur rear sus. parts
