Take it to the local REF. I heard they are easy going when it comes to smogging SR20's.

Worst comes to worse, you can always swap in the KA. Lots of effort, but may be worth it

for me..i had a hook up so i passed with flying colors for like $50 =) i know u probably don't have this hook up but there are a few things you can do..

1.) get a hook up/friend that can help u out..someone with a shop perhaps
2.) swap cars with someone with a stock KA that you know will pass..when you take THEIR car to get it smogged, bring ur DMV registration shiet, as long as it's around the same year the people that smog it don't even know the difference in years unless they are diehard nissan fans. My friend did this at the local gas station so yea
3.) rumor has it that sometimes the sr20det does in fact pass smog if you have a oil cooler. My friend has a greddy front oil cooler, after warming up his car and using that large fan to "simulate" real road conditions on the dyno, he actually passed smog! this was amazing..so you can get an oil cooler and try it out..if you don't pass, it's all good cuz you still got an oil cooler that will increase the longevity of your engine.
4.) pay some guy like hella money to just pass your shiet..

These are the 4 options i can think of..hope it's helpeful.

ref

Dont take your car to the state ref unless you never want to see it again. Illigal motors without evap or egr valves are a federal offense in ca. You can get jail time, a fat fine, and your car is issued a 30day certificate of destruction, and reg is taken.

Other than that the sr will not pass smog visually, but it will pass emissions if the cat is still installed and the evap is hooked up. Just make sure and heat your cat up.

who the hell told you that? and what's a certificate of destruction? All i've heard of is the referee not approving the engine change, then you have to swap engines and go see the ref again before you can register it. In fact when i went to school to get my smog license they never mentioned any of that about the referee. can someone else verify? im so interested im gonna call the referee center from work tomorrow. ill post back with details.

Stock SR's pass the smog emissions tests........

They do not pass visual........ visual is the only problem.......

So i say tape a $100 bill to the valvecover and tell the smog guy he can have whatever he finds under there......

There are no magical ways to get an illegal car smogged...... chineseb0i posted mostly all of them...... that's it.

smogy

My friend dan works at state ref.
He said " a certificate of destruction is when your car is not approved for street use in the us, they give you 30 days to make it comply by swapping the motor or whatever is needed. If you dont do it then they send your car to a scrap yard, or you can pay the fee and have a permanent non op and never be able to register the car.
in ca anyway."

Damn. If it came down to that and i couldnt swap the engine in time, i'd just report it stolen and use it as a track car...that still is kinda harsh. 30 days isnt enough time to swap an engine for a person who has a job and other things going on. Plus how would they send the car to a scrap yard if it's in your garage? I hope governor Swarzewhosit changes some of these retarted laws. He's an automobile enthusiast so it could happen.

SR will pass the sniffer/tailpipe test BUT]
will NOT pass visual test.

That's what the poster meant by the SR passing smog.
Bottom line. It does not pass.

the easy way

This is how you pass smog with an SR, bring your two best friends with you, Benjamin, and Benjamin.

Well, I can tell you that not all SR's are gonna pass the sniffer.. mine's pretty stock and failed the sniffer twice.. just slightly, but got worse results changing to a 3" catco. It would be a close call if everything was running right and totally stock.

I'm at work right now, doing smog checks. It's kinda slow so i came to check these threads..but anyways. The visual inspection is mostly based on the underhood label. This label tells your smog technician what to look for. If the sr20det doesnt have (for example) and EGR valve, but your underhood label says that it should have one...then the smog tech will fail your car and report as a "TAMPER" which means you have to fix the problem before it will be smogged no matter how much it costs. The underhood label will also say the displacement of your engine..which wont match up 2.4L vs 2.0L. Now let's say you take your underhood label off..Then the technician has to go to other sources to find what emission control systems your 240 is supposed to have. So he'll check his book or computer looking for the nissan 2.0L because that's what it says on your valve cover. He'll probably accidentally look up the specs on a sentra which comes with the sr20de motor but still probably has emission controls that the sr20det doesnt have. Basically they'll know. Also when they go to enter you engine displacement into the Smog Machine, it wont list a 2.0L cause the machine knows what types of engine families belong to certain cars. Then the smog tech will have to enter "Not Listed", and then enter that you have a 2.0L engine..Now the DMV and the government knows you have a 2.0L in a car that's supposed to have a 2.4L. This is a pretty thorough explanation, feel free to ask any more questoins.

so an sr can be made to pass the sniffer, and emissions bs, but not the visual. so if you live in a place where they do not do a visual check, then you should be good. all they do here is check for a cat, put it on the dyno thing at 25mph, then check to see that you have a gas cap. so as long as theres a cat and the motor is runnig well then i shjouldnt have too much trouble, right?

If you live in an area that uses the dyno to test your car, called an "Enhanced Area" then they definitely should do a visual check by law. Even the Basic Areas have a visual inspection. The machine prompts you to check such things as, EGR valves, air pumps, 02 sensors, cats, thermostatic air cleaners, etc etc. so for each prompt you have to enter pass or fail. Also the dyno tests your car at 50% load @ 15 mph, then 25% load @ 25 mph. Then it prompts you for all those visual inspection entries and if you car has adjustable timing, you have to enter the timing results. If you timing is off by more than 3 degrees, you fail. This is a functional test. They also test to see if your check engine light is working. It should be on with the key on engine off, then turn off when you start the engine. If your check engine light doesnt function properly, you fail smog. If you are lucky enough to live in an area with a careless smog tech, then you may be able to get it to pass if it's running clean. As long as he doesnt do a visual and just hits pass pass pass pass pass. Then you may have a chance.

well they might be sopposed to do those things, but ive been through the test, and all they did was check for a cat, and run it on the machine. the car that i took through also had the check engine light on whenever the car ran. it was always on. they didnt do anything about it. they never looked under the hood. they must just be realy careless.

I guess the bottom line is that unless you pay somebody off you risk the chance of failing. It doesn't matter how sloppy a job they do, all it takes is one time and you're stuck with a failed emissions test that is going to require some work to fix. Work as in keep going to different shops until one passes you or paying some dude off.

wow! thanks for schooling us westborough. this thread should go straight to archives, maybe even sticky.

about the 2.0L vs 2.4L thing. what if you get a different valve cover that doesnt say anything? or even make a fake 2.4L valve cover for an SR??
