i would go with a paging alarm system. i dont know, maybe thats just me. i, like you, have also been thinking about getting an alarm system for a long time. i say go with dei products (they make all the commercial brand names, clifford, python, viper, etc), compustar, or autopage. there are a lot of underground alarm systems out there that are really good also. i haven't researched them, but also, if you have or plan to go turbo in the future and want to get a turbo timer, you will need to do some rewiring because the alarm wont arm until after the car is shut off. im not sure how hard that is, but i think its a big pita. pricing for paging alarms go from $200 on ebay to 500 for a pretty good one, to up to $1000 for everything!

i have a K9 alarm from ebay, installed it myself in a weekend, it has a starter kill, shock sensor, perimeter sensor and built in keyless entry

does the trick very nicely. Its cool cause i have it set that if someone even leans toward the glass to look inside it will chirp at them

do a search there have been threads on this before tho

The biggest defense in terms of car alarms is in the install. Make sure the installer is very reputbale and knows what he is doing. Also layering works VERY well, such as using a back up siren with a secondary battery, a horn inside the cabin, use of an autolock and/or club. The more things your car has, the MUCH more likely the theif will just pass your car and go to the next.

Also you could always get a quick release steering hub which doubles as a theft detterent system too!!

Get an alarm With remote start and run timer already in it, then you won't need a turbo timer.

hands down best system (but kinda pricey) Viper 791xv Transponder system (2-way). Well it's not only a alarm but a remote starter too.

Just installed mine last weekend, well worth it since Boston's weather has been rather chilly.

honestly If I had to do it again I would take it in... It was fairly straightforward looking at the instructions but turned into a much harder job than I thought. My advice for the wires would be to get a chilton manual or something like that from your library or buy a wiring diagram from a local shop.

Patience is important, have plenty of time set aside.. Beware the power door lock system....oh god.

Good luck

If anyone needs wiring info for alarm/remote starter lemme know, i can fax the sheet over to anyone who needs it.

and yeah the door locks are a bit tricky, but only require a simple relay and about 5mins to get'em to work.
