One of my good friends had a SR20DET thats he bought for a kit car he was building and has now changed his mind and doesnt want to go thought all the pain of building any more so he went out and bought a New Miata. Witch is great for me because he will sell me his SR20DET with 6spd and ecu for $1400. The engine is in perfect con. and has 30,000 miles on it. Does any one have any thoughts on if I should or shouldnt take the deal and if so then any tips on a S13 with a SR20DET?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?

I'd say go for it. Unless he knows something might be wrong with it. Depending on where he got it. Regardless, I'd do it sr is a great engine and with a 6speed thats pretty rare and sporty; good for top speed racing (highway).

P.s.- make sure it has all the plugs and everything. At that price it might be cut and thats a bitch to re-wire unless you find/ order a new one. Otherwise, take it an have fun.

Ive seen the engine run its perfect. I just dont knot how hard the change over will be...

if its 6 speed its an s15 engine, there should be a wiring diagram available somewhere

Or do what the drifters in Japan do. Use an S14 transmission. Bolts right up...then again, that's extra money. =/

I know the engine is off of a 1993 s13  and he got the 6spd from some shop in Japan.

The change over is pretty easy.....You can do it with a friends help in a couple days including proper sleep of course..(rushing through it will only make you screw something up)...Just take out that shitty ka and wire loom and ecu and put the other in, and you have hoses and if you have an cooler, timer, boost control, blah blah blah.......It's easy, if you dont know what your doing find a friend that does.

Actually, they do have 6sp for the older sr20det's you just have to be one of the lucky ones to find one.

sr20parts.com wants $2000 for theirs, im sure you could sell the 6 speed and find a 5 speed without too much trouble for like $500 or so

Get</a> a boost gauge, a air/fuel ratio gauge, turbo timer, a decent front-mount intercooler, and an ACT clutch. If you want shorter gear ratios, keep the 6-speed. If you want longer gear ratios, which are good for turbo cars, sell the 6-speed and get yourself a 5-speed tranny.

Blah, in my personal opinion, 6-speed is overrated. It's like, "WOW YUO HAVE A SIX-SPEED SILVIIA@#)!!!111" Performance-wise, it ain't my preference with turbo cars.

Longer gear ratios = good for turbo

Is you use the 6 speed you are going to need the drive shaft, the S15 diff, and rear axels if you want it to function properly. The speed sensor was moved to the diff in the six-speed model (vs. being in the tranny)

Unless you are a real drifter you won't have to worry about breaking the 6-speed. Personally, I would prefer the shorter gears for road racing, but since you most likely be driving on the street, go with the 5 speed so you don't have to purchase the entire drivetrain.

BTW* AFAIK there is NO internet documentation of the S15 SR swap.

well if its an S15 motorex just did an install of one . my friend did the wiring . anyways $1400 is a smokin deal. even if its a blacktop or a redtop.

Takumi you totally opened my eyes to the world of trannys. I was wondering abotut he 6 speeds, because I always wanted one. To be quote honest, a shorter gear ratio might be used to your advantage, especially when downshifting. That's the main reason I would get it. How much would a normal total setup cost then if one was to buy the S15 sr20set plus 6 speed tranny? Plus anythign additional? TIA.
